5 sessions aim to give chemists and chemical engineers a thorough practical knowledge of crystallisation processes. After an introduction the course will cover crystallisation of compounds (including hydrates and solvates), different methods of crystallisation, polymorphism, salts and co-crystals, crystallisation of chiral compounds and classical resolution, analytical methods for studying the solid state and will finish with some case studies. Real life practical examples will be used throughout the course to exemplify the different aspects of crystallisation and polymorphism. The course will cover all aspects of the subject including crystallization of intermediates as well as final products. In addition, precipitations and amorphous solids will be covered and the differences between amorphous solids and crystalline solids will be discussed.

Abstract:
Industrial Scientists can no longer afford to experiment in a trial-and-error manner, changing one factor at a time. A far more effective method is to apply a systematic approach to experimentation that considers all factors simultaneously. This approach is called Design of Experiments (DoE) and many scientists use it as an efficient way to solve serious problems afflicting their projects. DoE provides information about the interaction of factors and the way the total system works, something not obtainable through traditional testing methods. DoE also shows how interconnected factors respond over a wide range of values, without requiring the testing of all possible values directly. DoE is a fundamental aspect of Quality by Design.

Use of the proper mixing technology is often essential for successful process results. This online course considers how we can choose appropriate mixing conditions for laboratory, pilot, and commercial scale units to ensure technical success. The course begins by rooting us in some essential basics of mixing technology. With those fundamentals, we then progress through different mixing applications in increasing levels of complexity: single-phase (blending and heat transfer), multiple phase (solid-liquid, immiscible liquid, gas-liquid, and 3-phase), and mixing in competitive rate processes (reactions and crystallizations). Throughout, we look at scale-up and scale-down by using examples from industrial processes which have a variety of mixing requirements. We will discuss how to design and execute practical experiments at the small scale which can identify mixing sensitivities in a process that could be an issue on scale-up. Though primarily focusing on operations in stirred tanks, we will also discuss mixing applications in flow systems like static mixers.

Abstract:
This 2½ day course aims to give chemists and chemical engineers a thorough practical knowledge of crystallisation processes. After an introduction the course will cover crystallisation of compounds (including hydrates and solvates), different methods of crystallisation, polymorphism, salts and co-crystals, crystallisation of chiral compounds and classical resolution, analytical methods for studying the solid state and will finish with some case studies. Real life practical examples will be used throughout the course to exemplify the different aspects of crystallisation and polymorphism. The course will cover all aspects of the subject including crystallization of intermediates as well as final products. In addition, precipitations and amorphous solids will be covered and the differences between amorphous solids and crystalline solids will be discussed.
