Nonuniformly elliptic problems
05 Sep 2022 - 09 Sep 2022 • Będlewo, Poland
Organizer:
Banach Center
Abstract:
Modern theory of PDEs is centered around nonlinear problems. We concentrate on a wide class of singular and degenerate elliptic and parabolic equations with nonstandard structure. They are employed in modelling the properties of anisotropic and inhomogeneous materials, diffusion-type processes in media having nonstandard properties (including the motions of multiphased fluids in strongly inhomogeneous porous media), and in models ranging from modern material science to meteorology and image restoration. Nonuniformly elliptic problems require plenty of modern, sophisticated tools to build a suitable functional analytical setting. We want to discuss various aspects of nonstandard growth PDE, such as density of smooth functions in unconventional function spaces and optimal regularity conditions for solutions or minimizers to variational functionals and the Lavrentiev gap phenomenon. Our aim is to share the newest developments in the field.

Noncommutative harmonic analysis and quantum groups
11 Sep 2022 - 16 Sep 2022 • Bedlewo, Poland
Abstract:
The meeting will be devoted to discussing the recent discoveries joining various strands of quantum group theory and further perspectives of the field. We would like to focus especially on the developments which are connected to noncommutative harmonic analysis, connecting quantum groups with the theory of operator algebras, operator spaces and subfactors, and with the theory of tensor C*-categories.

Random Matrices and Multivariate Analysis
25 Sep 2022 - 01 Oct 2022 • Będlewo, Poland
Organizer:
Banach Center
Abstract:
The aim of the workshop "Random Matrices and Multivariate Analysis" is to bring together researchers sharing an interest in the theory of random matrices, especially their distributions and applications, as well as in statistical procedures in multivariate analysis. It would involve a variety of fields such as linear and multilinear models, multivariate and matrix-variate distributions, statistics on manifolds, spectral analysis, generalized inverses, data visualization, covariance models, moments of random matrices, applications to economics, agriculture and engineering problems, etc.

Approximation and geometry in high dimensions
09 Oct 2022 - 15 Oct 2022 • Będlewo, Poland
Organizer:
Banach Center
Abstract:
Many applications in engineering, science, and statistics require inter- or extrapolation from data and involve systems that contain a huge amount of parameters. Generic examples are computer-based simulations, data mining, or forecasting. Indispensable foundation in every such situation is a mathematical or statistical model. It allows to represent the underlying real-world phenomenon - or at least some simplification thereof - in a way suitable for computation and mathematical analysis. The model formulation very often involves multivariate functions f(x1, ...,xd) where the dimension d may be very large. The problem of inter- and extrapolation then is to find a function which fits the given data in a suitable sense. Problems of this kind are so ubiquitous that several mathematical disciplines are devoted to them. Each uses its own language: In approximation theory and numerical analysis, the terms function identification, function recovery, and function reconstruction are common. Statisticians speak of regression, function estimation or function fitting. To learn a function is also a widely used phrase in machine learning and statistical learning theory.

Gdańsk-Kraków-Łódź-Warszawa Workshop in Singularity Theory — a special session dedicated to the memory of Stanislaw Łojasiewicz
11 Dec 2022 - 17 Dec 2022 • Warsaw, Poland
Organizer:
Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw
Abstract:
The aim of the workshop is to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the death of Professor Stanislaw Łojasiewicz — who played a crucial role in the creation of the Gdańsk-Kraków-Łódź-Warszawa Seminar in Singularity Theory, which is currently held online each month at IMPAN — by bringing together world-class experts in real and complex analytic geometry and in singularity theory — a vast area of research to which S. Łojasiewicz has made a fundamental contribution — as well as other researchers eager to connect with techniques in these domains. In particular, the diffusion of these techniques and their potential in current research problems, especially among young researchers, is one of the objectives of the meeting.
Topics:
Topics that will be discussed during the workshop include the geometry of semi- and sub- analytic sets, o-minimal structures, Łojasiewicz inequalities and their applications to non-standard and functional analysis, Lipschitz geometry, stratification theory, equisingularity and invariants of singularities.

Marvellous Event on Geometric Analysis
11 Oct 2023 - 13 Oct 2023 • Będlewo, Poland
Organizer:
Banach Center
Abstract:
The conference concerns the broadly understood mathematical analysis, in particular, the so-called geometric analysis (including calculus of variation and partial differential equations of geometric origin, Sobolev spaces theory on manifolds and on metric spaces, and knot theory issues related to curvature energies).

Banach Center - Oberwolfach Graduate Seminar — Model Reduction and Approximation: Projection-, Tensor- and Data-based Methods
12 Nov 2023 - 18 Nov 2023 • Będlewo, Poland
Organizer:
Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach (MFO, Oberwolfach Research Institute for Mathematics) and Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences
Abstract:
Many physical, chemical, biomedical, and techni- cal processes can be described by means of partial differential equations or dynamical systems. In recent years, multi-physics and multi-scale prob- lems have become a particular focus of applied mathematical research. A numerical treatment of such problems is usually very time consuming and thus requires the development of efficient discret- ization schemes that are often realized on large parallel computing environments. In addition, these problems often need to be solved repeatedly for many varying parameters, introducing a curse of dimensionality when the solution is also viewed as a function of these parameters. Examples for such situations include design, control, optimiza- tion, inverse problems, uncertainty analysis and statistical sampling.

The seminar takes place at the Mathematical Re- search and Conference Center of the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Będlewo.

Banach Center – Oberwolfach Graduate Seminar — Optimal Transport Theory and Hydrodynamics (from Euler to Monge and vice versa).
Abstract:
Optimal transport theory is a very successful field of mathematics connecting calculus of variations, probability theory, differential geometry, partial differential equations, functional analysis, statis- tics and computer sciences. Going back to Monge around 1780, this theory has deep connections with the earlier work of Euler on Hydrodynamics around 1750. This connection has recently known a strong revival on many different sides, leading to various non trivial generalizations of the con- cept of optimal transport.

The seminar takes place at the Mathematical Re- search and Conference Center of the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Będlewo.
