Dagstuhl-Seminar — Evaluation Perspectives of Recommender Systems: Driving Research and Education
20 mai 2024 - 24 mai 2024 • Schloss Dagstuhl, Wadern, Allemagne
Organisateur:
Schloss Dagstuhl - Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik
Résumé:
While recommender systems is largely an applied field, their evaluation builds on and intersects theories from information retrieval, machine learning, and human-computer interaction. Historically, the theories and evaluation approaches in these fields are very different. Thoroughly evaluating recommender systems requires integrating all perspectives. Hence, this seminar will bring together experts from these fields and serve as a vehicle for discussing and developing the state-of-the-art and practice of evaluating recommender systems. The seminar will set the ground for developing recommender systems evaluation metrics, methods, and practices through collaborations and discussions between participants from diverse backgrounds, e.g., academic and industry researchers, industry practitioners, senior and junior. We emphasize the importance of getting and keeping the big picture of a recommender system’s performance in its context of use, for which it is ultimate to incorporate the technical and the human element. We will set the basis for the next generation of researchers, apt to evaluate and advance recommender systems thoroughly.

Dagstuhl-Seminar — Designing Computers’ Control Over Our Bodies
02 jui 2024 - 07 jui 2024 • Schloss Dagstuhl, Wadern, Allemagne
Organisateur:
Schloss Dagstuhl - Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik
Résumé:
Previous human-computer interaction (HCI) paradigms mostly focused on a controller-responder relationship, where the user issued a command to control the computer to execute a task. This paradigm has served computer science well for many decades. However, more recent research steered away from it by not only considering cases where the human being is in control, but also the computer. In particular, more recent research considered human-in-the-loop interactions, where the computer, in return, can also take control. Currently, we are witnessing an emergence of systems in which the computational machine can take control, and in particular, embodied control of the user’s body through technologies such as electrical muscle stimulation, galvanic vestibular stimulation or exoskeletons. In other words, the user’s body is physically controlled by the machine. Controlling the human body by a computational machine can have many advantages. In the example of the autonomous car, the user is transported to their location faster and more safely than if a human was in control. Similarly, autonomous exoskeletons can provide mobility to paralyzed populations, and even enhance abilities such as strength beyond what is otherwise humanly possible.

Dagstuhl-Seminar — Computational Analysis and Simulation of the Human Voice
09 jui 2024 - 14 jui 2024 • Schloss Dagstuhl, Wadern, Allemagne
Organisateur:
Schloss Dagstuhl - Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik
Résumé:
The human voice is able to produce a very rich set of different sounds, making it the single most important channel for communication human-to-human, and also potentially for human-computer interaction. Spoken communication can be thought of as a stack of layered transport protocols that includes language, speech, voice, and sound. In this Dagstuhl seminar, we will be concerned with the voice and its function as a transducer from neurally encoded speech patterns to sound. This very complex mechanism remains insufficiently explained both in terms of analysing voice sounds, as for example in medical assessment of vocal function, and of simulating them from first principles, as in talking or singing machines.

Dagstuhl-Seminar — Computational Creativity for Game Development
23 jui 2024 - 28 jui 2024 • Schloss Dagstuhl, Wadern, Allemagne
Organisateur:
Schloss Dagstuhl - Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik
Résumé:
Game design and implementation are tasks which require a high amount of creativity, and which must lead to products which require a high amount of fine-tuned functionality. For example, a game “level” should not only look appealing, it should also be playable and it should be interesting to play. These are not features which can be acquired simply by “training on big data”, which is what most developments in modern artificial intelligence are based on. The goal of this Dagstuhl Seminar is to investigate to what extent modern artificial intelligence techniques can produce meaningful and functional game content, and what changes to or extensions of these techniques can improve this AI-driven creative process.

Dagstuhl-Seminar — Extended Reality Accessibility
08 aou 2024 - 13 sep 2024 • Schloss Dagstuhl, Wadern, Allemagne
Organisateur:
Schloss Dagstuhl - Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik
Résumé:
Extended Reality (XR), including Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR), technologies are on the cusp of becoming mainstream. In 2019, about 6 million VR and AR headsets were shipped worldwide, with an estimated 16.5 million headsets in use in 2021, and predictions of over 50 million by 2026. By some estimates, this represents a $1 trillion market. Ideally, these technologies would be accessible to all who desire to use them; however, today, XR technologies are not accessible to millions of people with disabilities or impairments (visual, motor, cognitive), with incompatible physical characteristics (e.g., hairstyles and head shapes), with health conditions, and beyond. This includes children and the growing group of elderly people. In particular, the low accessibility of these technologies today hinders their widespread adoption worldwide, especially in the educational systems (learning, training), in industry (training, assistance), and in health care (rehabilitation, therapy, telemedicine). Thus, this Dagstuhl Seminar will address an urgent need in the field to ensure that all individuals can benefit from the applications that XR offers.

Dagstuhl Research Meeting — Turtle Hack: Programmieren statt programmiert werden
24 nov 2024 - 29 nov 2024 • Schloss Dagstuhl, Wadern, Allemagne
Organisateur:
Schloss Dagstuhl - Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik
Résumé:
This workshop brings together researchers and educators with a common mission: empowering students to become creative problem-solvers in a yet-unknown future. Central to our cause is the XLogoOnline learning environment, that is already embraced by a thriving community of over 100,000 learners each year. Developed collaboratively by leading universities and institutions such as ETH Zurich, Max-Planck-Institute of Technology, and University of Trier, this platform aims at providing the means to foster algorithmic problem-solving in compulsory schooling from primary to higher secondary school. Turtle Hack brings stakeholders together and serves as a nexus for sharing visions and expertise. We plan and discuss the future of our platform, guiding its trajectory for years to come. From workshops to brainstorming sessions, Turtle Hack is where theory meets practice, nurturing the next generation of programmers and innovators.
