The study of phonons–a core discipline in the conventional condensed matter physics literature–is currently being viewed in a new light. With a focus on both elucidation and manipulation of phonons across multiple scales, the emerging field of phononics has been vigorously gathering pace in recent years. In 2011, Phononics 2011 was launched as a prime international conference for the field to take place on a biannual basis. Phononics 2023, the sixth in the series, welcomes scientists and engineers from across disciplines and from across the world.

UK Metamaterials Network, UK Acoustics Network

The one-week summer school, aimed at PhD students, Postdocs & Early Career Academics, will be hosted between the Henry Royce Institute and Manchester Metropolitan University. There will be five focussed days: i) Numerical Modelling (e.g., finite element), ii) Analytical Modelling, iii) Manufacturing, iv) Experimental Methods, and v) Career Progression/Funding. These will include invited summary lectures and specific state of the art talks from internationally recognised academic and industry experts. As exciting topics with local expertise, we will run metamaterials sports engineering linked projects as part of this event.
