We are witnessing a profound rapid change in our understanding of the phenomenon of Gravitation. We are exploring various implications of the general theory of relativity, and of its modified versions, in which gravitation is a consequence of the curvature of spacetime and also various investigations into the mathematical foundations of the general theory of relativity, the nature of spacetime, and the imprints of quantum mechanics. We have been commissioning sophisticated high energy experiments aiming at understanding the elementary particles that are the fundamental constituents of baryonic and leptonic matter and their underlying forces.

QCD with Electron Ion Collider (QEIC) II

This will be the second in the series of workshops which aims to organise the Indian high energy and nuclear physics community around the EIC. One of the outcomes of this meeting is to arrive at a joint proposal from all Indian institutes for funding by Indian agencies for participation in EIC.

The conference Theory meeting experiments (TMEX-2023) will be held on 5-11 January 2023. It will bring together leading theoreticians and experimentalists to discuss forefront topics in the field of particle astrophysics and cosmology. This meeting will be organized in Quy Nhon at the International Centre for Interdisciplinary Science Education (ICISE) in the spirit of the Rencontres du Vietnam, a series of topical international multidisciplinary meetings, created by Jean Trân Thanh Vân, which in the past covered many topics in physics, astronomy and biology. Lunches will be served in the Center to all participants, in order to enhance interaction among scientists.

The analysis of relativistic quantum systems

Relativistic Quantum Mechanics is central in Physics and Mathematical Physics. It plays a very important role in the analysis of many relevant topics in that field. The basic operator for relativistic models is the Dirac operator. Contrary to the case of the non-relativistic Schrödinger operator, the Dirac operator is not semi-bounded, its spectrum being real and unbounded in both directions, for positive and negative values having a gap (−m, m), m the mass of the particle, in the middle of the essential spectrum. This property has many consequences, both for the physical interpretation of the solutions of the models based on the Dirac operator as for the much more difficult mathematical analysis of those models. These difficulties arise already at the level of one-particle systems. For N-particle systems, the difficulties arising from the total unboundedness of the operator together with the usual difficulties for N-particle systems in Quantum Mechanics are very stimulating mathematically, since they are the source of a large number of very interesting and difficult problems that are far from being understood at the moment. Various groups of mathematicians and mathematical physicists have specialized on these topics in the past two or three decades and have produced already a good amount of important results. But much remains to be understood and proved. The aim of this workshop is to stimulate the interaction of researchers in all those groups, researchers who have different approaches, points of view and methodologies. Also many of them have so far specialized on a part of the theory, and open discussions about the models, the difficulties to analyze them, the existing methods, the new perspectives to tackle more difficult problems out of reach at the moment, among all of them should be a great opportunity for making progress and opening new perspectives for the future.

Higher Structures, Gravity and Fields

We organise a 3-week programme bringing together theoretical physicists and mathematicians working in the areas of gravity, dualities, extended geometry, field theory, higher homotopy structures, and other infinite-dimensional superalgebras. The overarching goal is to make progress in constructing “exotic” field theories, where conventional notions of spacetime break down, and thus traditional methods fail. These include exotic forms of gravity, extended (double and exceptional) geometry, string/M-theory and its dualities, and higher spin theories. The common feature of these theories is the appearance of higher symmetry algebras, generalising the notion of Lie algebras. In this programme, we will bring physicists and mathematicians together working on these “higher structures” in order to better understand the fundamental structures of physical theories and develop a bootstrap based on higher structures.

The origin of cosmic magnetism is one of the most fascinating topics in astrophysics and cosmology. Both a primordial or an astrophysical origin are consistent with current observations, which include upper limits on primordial magnetic seeds from the cosmic microwave background (CMB), detection of magnetic fields in large scales structures, and lower limits on the magnetisation of voids inferred by TeV blazars observations (difficult to explain by fully astrophysical seed magnetic fields). This new (hybrid) conference comprises different technical and theoretical expertises in a unique way.

Learning Workshop on BPS States and 3-Manifolds

The main scientific theme of the workshop is counting BPS states in physical systems associated to 3-manifolds or links, and interpretation of these counts as old or new topological invariants.

Although the ideas behind such relations appeared already in the late 90s, the recent years have seen some dramatic new developments. The goal of this learning workshop is to bring together physicists and mathematicians who are experts in the subject and also those who would like to enter the field. In particular, the talks will be given both by senior scientists and junior ones, including PhD students who only recently began working on the subject. The talks will be supplemented by dedicated discussion sessions where experts can answer questions that will be submitted by participants to the moderator in advance, or asked directly during the session.

Particle Physicists study matter at its smallest and most fundamental scale. The well-known proton, neutron and similar particles are composed of quarks. Atoms also contain electrons; together with the two heavier versions of the electron (the muon and tau), each with its associated neutrino, they make up the group of leptons. Another ingredient of the catalogue of particles is the Higgs Boson, discovered at the CERN Lab's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in 2012. Experiments studying these and other particles require large accelerators and detectors: the circumference of the LHC is 27 km and one of the detectors to study the collisions is 25 meters high and 45 meters long. Building and running these machines is expensive, in terms of money and human effort. It is therefore important to use the best statistical techniques to extract the maximum amount of information from the hard-won data. This workshop brings together Statisticians and experimental Particle Physicists to discuss how best to achieve this.

The purpose of this workshop is to bring together scientists with different backgrounds and expertise to discuss open problems, recent developments and future directions in axion physics, a field that is notoriously replete with interdisciplinary connections. The aim is to foster a fruitful cross breeding between different theoretical areas, with a focus on certain open issues in axion particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology. Quantitative assessments of the axion contribution to Cold Dark Matter (CDM) involve top-notch lattice simulations of non- perturbative QCD effects, as well as of the cosmic evolution of axionic topological defects. Astrophysical observations provide strong bounds on axion properties because stellar evolution would be affected by the existence of axions and, intriguingly, some excesses in star energy losses have been reported. Cosmological scenarios in which the PQ symmetry is broken before inflation foresee axions imprints in the CMB, while in post-inflationary scenarios axion miniclusters, with overdensities several orders of magnitude larger than the local density of CDM, are expected to form, and a reliable assessment of their properties is of utmost importance. From the experimental side, a blossoming of potentially game-changing ideas, with an exciting crossover from experimental particle physics to materials science and cutting-edge technologies is inspiring new methods for axion searches. Novel techniques have been put forth that, besides exploiting the axion- photon coupling, aim to reveal axions via their couplings to nucleons and electrons. The interaction between the experimental and theoretical communities will foster the merging of `how to search’ with `where to search’ into optimized strategies to hunt for the axion.

A major goal in strong-interaction physics is to understand the nature of hadrons, which make up visible matter, and much research activity revolves around two fundamental questions: what are hadrons made up of and how does Quantum Chromo-dynamics (QCD), the strong-interaction component of the Standard Model, produce them? Although these questions are simple, the answers may not be. To address these questions, spectroscopy is a valuable and time-honored tool, as it enables us to understand the structure of mesons, baryons and exotics and how they are produced. In this context, the recent discovery of many new hadronic states, in particular the plethora of observed X, Y, Z states, is exciting, as these objects challenge the commonplace view of hadrons as either quark-antiquark or three-quark color-singlet states.

One could say that the universe is both very simple and very complicated. It is very simple in the sense that we know of basic fundamental laws and principles that rule its behaviour, from particles to the cosmos as a whole, in an incredible amount of detail. Mass, for instance, one of the key concepts in physics, arises from the so-called Higgs mechanism of breaking the symmetry of a field that becomes nonzero due to its Mexican hat potential. Yet it is complicated because as consequences of such physical laws we are faced with mysteries such as most of the universe consisting of dark matter and dark energy, which are there in the theory to account for what we see, but that is not in plain sight when we look up in the sky. In this final talk of the Wolverhampton lecture series, Professor Nikolopoulos, one of the physicists who discovered the Higgs boson, will discuss the origin of mass in the universe and what we currently know about dark matter.

Domains such as cosmology, astrophysics, nuclear or particle physics rely heavily on the use of stochastic simulation to design data analyses and perform inference with respect to fundamental physics theories. With the advances of Deep Learning, Bayesian inference techniques, a new frontier has come into view that focuses on the extension of traditional scientific programming along the two distinct directions of differentiable programming and probabilistic programming. The former plays an important role in navigating high-dimensional spaces, while the latter can manifestly incorporate generative modeling and inference into scientific data analyses. Both promise to expand the science reach of data-intensive domains through, e.g., the integration of domain knowledge and symmetries into neural networks, algorithmic robustness, alignment of science and training optimization goals, uncertainty quantification, causal inference, and more complete inference. However, most production scientific pipelines are not yet compatible with these techniques and their widespread adoption would represent a deep change in the scientific software landscape. This program will provide the opportunity for researchers from Computer Science and Fundamental Physics to develop applications as well as strategies for integrating these paradigms into existing scientific workflows and to close the gap of what is theoretically possible and practically deployed.

We plan to invite practitioners of both AMO and particle physics to sit together and learn from each other about the state of the art and to discuss how quantum sensors can be used to search for “old” and “new” types of Beyond the Standard Model physics.

What is String Theory? Weaving Perspectives Together

While it is widely acknowledged that string theory provides a framework for addressing quantum gravitational (and even quantum field theoretic) questions, the precise nature of its organizational principle remains obscure. Nearly three decades ago, when the question “What is string theory?” was asked, the perturbative string worldsheet viewpoint played the starring role. Since then, the discovery of D-branes, string dualities, and the holographic AdS/CFT correspondence has had spacetime dynamics taking center-stage. Much insight has been gleaned from these developments. We now have, for example, a much broader class of string backgrounds with better control over compactifications; strong constraints on the low energy effective field theories; a plethora of gauge-string dualities as well as applications of holographic techniques to a wide class of physical problems; and new angles on semiclassical gravitational physics from a fruitful interplay with quantum information in holography. Together with an influx of new tools and techniques, we have a very rich set of perspectives that illuminate the subject we continue to call string theory. While all these developments are interesting in and of themselves, it is an opportune moment to attempt to synthesize these, often disparate, strands and arrive at a deeper answer to the question in the title.

String theory encompasses a wide range of perspectives on the nature of spacetime, from qubit models of black hole information to the string worldsheet. This conference will aim for a new synthesis of the field that builds on recent progress on the role of quantum information, new top-down techniques in string compactification and string field theory, and growing evidence for precise holographic dualities beyond anti-de Sitter space. The focus will be on bridging the divide between the IR and the UV. We will explore recent progress in non-perturbative string theory and stringy constraints on effective field theory, and develop the connections between the gravitational path integral, higher topologies, and entanglement, from low energy to the string scale.
