Geometry, Analysis, and Quantum Physics of Monopoles

Zusammenfassung:
The subject of magnetic monopoles is by now classic in both physics and mathematics. Since intense advancements in mid 1970’s, numerous deep connections to theoretical physics, algebraic geometry, and geometric analysis have been discovered. Nonetheless, many important problems remain unsolved. Recently, monopoles acquired new significance in areas such as string theory, the Seiberg--Witten theory, quantum gauge-theory spaces of vacua, knot invariants, and the Geometric Langlands correspondence. This workshop brings together experts from around the world advancing very different perspectives, identify important open problems, and connecting diverse methods used by different groups.

The Neutrino Telescopes Workshop is one of the most prestigious and longest tradition international events in the field of Particle Physics. It dates back to 1988 when Prof. Milla Baldo Ceolin conceived it and launched the first edition. It soon developed into a discussion forum for the latest discoveries and new ideas shaping the fascinating future scenarios in topics ranging from Neutrinos to Astrophysics and Cosmology.

The 2021 edition will focus to the original, at the time pioneering, topics of the workshop: Large Detectors for Neutrino Astrophysics together with a rich program ranging from neutrino physics, flavour physics to cosmology.

Due to Covid19 - Sars-Cov-2 circumstances, it will be held online. Registration is free but mandatory

The XIX International Workshop on Neutrino Telescopes is organized by the INFN Padova Unit and by the Physics and Astronomy Department of Padova University.

Under the patronage of the University of Padova celebrating in 2022 its 800 years of activity.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world’s facility for probing fundamental physics at the electroweak scale and well beyond. As it enters a new phase of extended data accumulation, two broad challenges emerge: how to fulfill the potential for percent-level precision with the large dataset, and how to maximise the information that can be extracted from each event about the underlying scattering process, in particular with machine learning. Solving these problems will have an impact across a wide range of physics topics: establishing the properties of the newly discovered interactions of the Higgs sector and understanding electroweak symmetry breaking, enhancing the sensitivity of searches for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM), and precision measurements of a range of fundamental parameters in the Standard Model.

Neutrino Physics: Exploring Matter and Universe

Neutrino physics is one of the most flourishing fields in particle physics. Neutrinos are elementary particles of nature, and scientists found they have mass. This was the topic of the 2015 Nobel prize, and is the only clear evidence for this mass beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. Scientists all over the world study properties of neutrinos or use neutrinos as a new tool to investigate astrophysical objects and fundamental properties of the universe. In this talk Dr Katori will review particle physics and the status of the most exciting neutrino projects in the world.

In many cases the efforts initiated at these Workshops result in completed projects that are published in international journals. These projects have sometimes proven to be major breakthroughs such as the MSW effect, which was first discussed at the WIN85 meeting in Finland.

Particle Physicists study matter at is smallest scale and try to reveal how the physical world is constructed from elementary particles and the forces acting between them. The well-known proton, neutron and similar particles are composed of quarks. Atoms also contain electrons; together with the two heavier versions of the electron (the muon and tau), each with its associated neutrino, they make up the group of leptons. Another ingredient of the catalogue of particles is the Higgs boson, discovered at the CERN Lab's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in 2012.

Mathematical Foundations of the Swampland Program

Recently, there has been great interest in determining criteria which differentiate between effective low-energy field theories which can be consistently completed in the ultraviolet into quantum gravity, said to be in the ‘Landscape’, from theories which appear consistent but nonetheless defy such a coupling to quantum gravity, the so-called ‘Swampland’. A number of such criteria, or Swampland Conjectures, have been proposed in the literature and attracted considerable interest in the high energy physics community. If confirmed, they have far-reaching consequences for physics and cosmology, such as for the structure of large field inflation in early time cosmology or for the mechanism responsible for the observed late-time acceleration of the universe, to name but the most striking ones. On the other hand, the Swampland Conjectures translate, in the context of string theory, into conjectures regarding the structure of possible compactifications, or string geometries. String theory is therefore in a unique position to quantitatively test - and possibly refine - such general Swampland Conjectures. This Scientific Program proposes to study these intriguing connections between general properties of quantum gravity and the geometry of string compactifications. It aims to bring together world experts working at the forefront of research in string theory, field theoretic aspects of quantum gravity, and geometry at this unique time in which our understanding of the Swampland is quickly evolving.

Quantum Field Theory at the Boundary

Boundaries and defects have been at the heart of crucial developments in theoretical physics in the last 20 years: holography (field theories could live at the boundary of a higher- dimensional gravitational theory), entanglement (the entangling surface can be treated as a defect), black holes (the horizon is a boundary), topological insulators and semi-metals (the topologically-protected massless modes live at the boundary), and non-local operators such as Wilson and ‘t Hooft lines (defects defined by appropriate boundary conditions). Additionally, many other areas have made major advances in recent years whose implications for quantum field theory with boundaries and defects have yet to be explored fully: the conformal bootstrap, dualities among (2+1)d quantum field theories, supersymmetric localization, integrability, and so on. However, progress in these areas has largely been carried out by separated communities working in isolation from the others. This scientific program thus aims to bring together a diverse group of leading theorists interested in boundaries and defects in quantum field theory, from the formal/mathematical to the applied, to forge collaborations between different areas, identify common subjects and complementary approaches, and set the agenda for future developments and new applications.

Gravitational Emergence in AdS/CFT

An outstanding problem of modern physics is the reconciliation of the two most successful broad theories of physics: general relativity, which describes the gravitational force exerted by massive objects in terms of the bending and rippling of spacetime, and quantum mechanics, which describes the behavior of matter on the minute scales of subatomic particles such as electrons. While both theories are remarkably successful independently, they appear to give contradictory predictions of phenomena that involve gravity at the small scales at which quantum mechanics is relevant. Such phenomena include the Big Bang, when the universe was small enough to be described by quantum mechanics and sufficiently dense to also require a gravitational description; also the process of the final stages of the death of a large star, when a black hole is formed and the star’s matter is concentrated in an extremely small volume. A proper description of these phenomena requires a unified theory of quantum gravity.

Gravitational-waves are a new way to explore the sky and uncover the Universe’s deepest mysteries. Although the first detection of these "ripples of space-time" is only a few years old, scientists can now harness the potential of gravitational waves in testing Einstein’s General Relativity theory under extreme conditions, helping to understand the origin of matter, and measuring the evolution of the Universe. Researchers from all around the world are gathering in Oaxaca to discuss recent progress in, and the future of gravitational-wave science. The workshop "Detection and analysis of gravitational waves in the era of multi-messenger astronomy: From mathematical modelling to machine learning", provides a forum, unique in its genre, for discussing new mathematical methods in modelling, detecting, and analyzing gravitational waves, as well as their integration with machine learning, or artificial intelligence.

Flux tubes, Quark Confinement and Exotic Hadrons

Zusammenfassung:
Understanding how color is confined in QCD, and the binding of quarks into hadrons, is one of the major unresolved challenges in fundamental physics. The central piece in this puzzle is the chromoelectric flux tube, or confining string, which holds quarks together. In recent years, tantalizing new insights into the dynamical properties of confining strings have been obtained using various theoretical tools such as effective string theory, integrability, the modern S-matrix bootstrap, and gauge/gravity duality. Lattice gauge theory supplies important information about the spectrum of flux tube excitations. Finally, the recent experimental discovery of heavy flavor tetraquarks provides a direct observational probe of flux tube junctions. This conference will bring together experts in these different fields to initiate the exchange of ideas and stimulate future cross-disciplinary developments.
