Taking the Temperature: Statistical Nuclear Physics for Astrophysics and Applications

Zusammenfassung:
Statistical estimates of nuclear reaction rates are essential ingredients for astrophysical model calculations, e.g. r-process nucleosynthesis in neutron star mergers, and nuclear applications, e.g. next generation nuclear reactor performance. Rate calculations require experimental or theoretical constraints for nuclear properties such as level densities (temperature), gamma-strength functions, particle optical potentials, and level spin distributions. Recently major advances have been made experimentally constraining the statistical properties of nuclei, particularly off the valley of beta-stability, while systematic studies have identified critical data needs for astrophysics and applications. As such, the time is ripe to “take the temperature” of the field of statistical nuclear physics to share recent advances and promising opportunities.

The production and use of energetic radioactive beams is a rapidly developing new field in nuclear physics, especially in Europe. Pioneering experiments are taking place, dedicated facilities are in successful operation and new facilities are under construction Many workshops and conferences have been devoted to this new field and senior scientists have ample opportunities to be informed on the latest developments. Complementary to that and being an educative effort, the European summer schools on exotic beams have been devised so that Ph.D. students and young post-docs are introduced to this new area and receive fore-front and detailed information.

Many remarkable properties of gauge theories rely on the topology of field configurations and/or ambient spacetime and are connected with quantum anomalies and nonperturbative excitations. These properties, often exact, have many implications in the physics of fundamental interactions, condensed matter systems and statistical mechanics models. They also account for a large part of the investigations in string theory, and combined with supersymmetry have led to exact solutions of low-energy theories and the discovery of duality relations between supersymmetric gauge theories. Meanwhile, a renewed interest in topological aspects has emerged from condensed matter physics, through the study of topological phases of quantum matter. The effective field theories for these systems are not of the usual Landau-Ginzburg-Higgs type, rather, they are described by topological gauge theories. The goal of this GGI activity is to bring together theoreticians of different backgrounds, in condensed matter, high energy and mathematical physics, with the belief that interdisciplinary approaches can lead to substantial progress in many directions.

IPA 2020 — Interplay between Particle and Astroparticle physics 2020

There are several open questions in Physics today each of which touches the fields of both Particle Physics and Astroparticle/Cosmology. For example, only 5% of the Universe is described by the Standard Model of particle physics. A far larger contribution comes from the elusive Dark Matter whose existence has been inferred from Astroparticle measurements, and for which a large variety of models have been built by the theory community. Dark Matter is searched for in dedicated direct and indirect detection experiments but also in high-energy collisions at the LHC. Other subjects, such as the baryogenesis is still an open question related both to leptogenesis and CP violation and the matter content of today’s Universe. The knowledge of the neutrino sector has greatly increased over the past decades, but the question of the hierarchy is not yet solved and would need both accelerator/astroparticle and cosmological measurements to be fully understood. The physics of inflation which will be better constrained in the coming years would also need skills from both fields to be fully explored. Is a simple extension of the Standard Model sufficient or do we need more? In many fields the “single experiment” measurements have given way to more global views of our models: electroweak fits, exploring the parameter space of models beyond the Standard Model taking into account measurements and limits on new signatures.

The IPA2020 conference will bring together experimentalists and theorists to discuss the topics mentioned above with an emphasis on exchange between the different but correlated fields.

The international conference “Channeling - Charged and Neutral Particles Channeling Phenomena” is devoted to the common discussion on advances in physics of coherent/incoherent interaction of relativistic and nonrelativistic hadrons and leptons (protons, ions, electrons, muons and related antiparticles) in strong electromagnetic fields of various origins and structures, from solid amorphous and crystalline to laser and plasma based ones. The topics of the Channeling meetings have been extended to include also the interaction of radiations and beams (wide broad electromagnetic radiations, atoms and neutrons) in various structured media as well as meta-materials to be investigated at the channeling physics approach. One of the main application of the physics of beams channeling relates to the future accelerators, storage rings and radiation optics projects, and it is known as charged and neutral beams novel manipulation techniques, i.e. shaping - collimation and deflection, and acceleration. Recent studies have shown the feasibility of the channeling phenomenology application for description of other mechanisms of interaction of both charged and neutral particle beams in solids, plasmas and external electromagnetic fields covering the research areas from crystal and capillary based accelerators, undulators, waveguides, and X-ray/neutron optical elements.

According to the modern cosmological paradigm, about 2/3 of the energy of the Universe is in the dark form and about 5/6 of the matter is invisible. However, numerous recent attempts to detect independently the dark-matter particles failed, and a number of other problems with the existence of dark energy and dark matter (such as the anomalous friction in the dark-matter halos of galaxies, etc.) become now more and more obvious. All these troubles raise the question if the "dark" substance is merely a result of excessive extrapolations involved in the theoretical analysis? So, it is timely to gather specialists from various branches of astronomy and astrophysics to discuss these issues.

The 5th International Conference on Particle Physics and Astrophysics (ICPPA-2020) will be held in Moscow, Russia, (from the 5th to the 9th of October). The conference is organized by National Research Nuclear University “MEPhI”. The aim of the Conference is to share scientific knowledge, to promote contacts between scientists and to develop new ideas in fundamental research. We will bring together experts and young scientists working in experimental and theoretical areas of nuclear physics, particle physics (including astroparticle physics), and cosmology. Most recent results from the modern experiments in these areas and advanced detector technology development will be presented and discussed.

In the last decade a number of experimental and theoretical discoveries have caused a notable revival of interest in systems with large local Hilbert spaces which realize a variety of intriguing and largely unexplored phenomena such as non-Fermi-liquid behavior, exotic quantum criticality, orbitally selective Mott physics, multipolar/hidden orders and more. While many models have been proposed for each of these phenomena, a single framework to understand the systems with multiple degrees of freedom and, consequently, richer order parameters and richer quasiparticles, is missing.

Modularity is at the heart of many deep results in mathematics--from the proof of Fermat’s last theorem to moonshine to the Langlands correspondence. At the same time, modular group representations and automorphic forms underlie many interesting physical phenomena in quantum field theory and string theory, including understanding of dualities, boundary conditions, and supersymmetric black holes, among other things. This conference will bring together physicists and mathematicians to discuss emerging connections between a web of fundamental objects in physics and mathematics, united in the crucial role played by modularity.

The subject of magnetic monopoles is by now classic in both physics and mathematics. Since intense advancements in mid 1970’s, numerous deep connections to theoretical physics, algebraic geometry, and geometric analysis have been discovered. Nonetheless, many important problems remain unsolved. Recently, monopoles acquired new significance in areas such as string theory, the Seiberg--Witten theory, quantum gauge-theory spaces of vacua, knot invariants, and the Geometric Langlands correspondence. This workshop brings together experts from around the world advancing very different perspectives, identify important open problems, and connecting diverse methods used by different groups.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world’s facility for probing fundamental physics at the electroweak scale and well beyond. As it enters a new phase of extended data accumulation, two broad challenges emerge: how to fulfill the potential for percent-level precision with the large dataset, and how to maximise the information that can be extracted from each event about the underlying scattering process, in particular with machine learning. Solving these problems will have an impact across a wide range of physics topics: establishing the properties of the newly discovered interactions of the Higgs sector and understanding electroweak symmetry breaking, enhancing the sensitivity of searches for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM), and precision measurements of a range of fundamental parameters in the Standard Model.

Particle Physicists study matter at is smallest scale and try to reveal how the physical world is constructed from elementary particles and the forces acting between them. The well-known proton, neutron and similar particles are composed of quarks. Atoms also contain electrons; together with the two heavier versions of the electron (the muon and tau), each with its associated neutrino, they make up the group of leptons. Another ingredient of the catalogue of particles is the Higgs boson, discovered at the CERN Lab's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in 2012.

TAU2021 is the 16th International Workshop on Tau Lepton Physics in the series devoted to the physics of the tau lepton and its associated neutrino. The goal of the workshop is to bring theorists and experimentalists together to discuss recent progress in the field. Latest results from e+e- colliders (Belle II, BESIII experiments), the proton-proton colliders (ATLAS, CMS and LHCb experiments), g-2 and the neutrino experiments (DUNE, MINOS, etc.) will be presented. Properties of the tau lepton, as well as methods of using tau leptons as a probe for new physics, will be discussed, along with a review of future experimental projects.

This conference series began in 1970 at Duke University. The Seville meeting follows the successful events in Glasgow (2013) and Tallahassee (2016); and canvass similar themes. It will highlight the physics of baryons and related subjects in astro-, nuclear- and particle-physics, developing our understanding of the spectrum, structure and reactions of baryons using all available tools. Particular emphasis will be placed on elucidating the role of confinement and emergent mass, key non-perturbative phenomena within the Standard Model. Recent developments at existing facilities and those anticipated from the next-generation will also be showcased.

An outstanding problem of modern physics is the reconciliation of the two most successful broad theories of physics: general relativity, which describes the gravitational force exerted by massive objects in terms of the bending and rippling of spacetime, and quantum mechanics, which describes the behavior of matter on the minute scales of subatomic particles such as electrons. While both theories are remarkably successful independently, they appear to give contradictory predictions of phenomena that involve gravity at the small scales at which quantum mechanics is relevant. Such phenomena include the Big Bang, when the universe was small enough to be described by quantum mechanics and sufficiently dense to also require a gravitational description; also the process of the final stages of the death of a large star, when a black hole is formed and the star’s matter is concentrated in an extremely small volume. A proper description of these phenomena requires a unified theory of quantum gravity.

Gravitational-waves are a new way to explore the sky and uncover the Universe’s deepest mysteries. Although the first detection of these "ripples of space-time" is only a few years old, scientists can now harness the potential of gravitational waves in testing Einstein’s General Relativity theory under extreme conditions, helping to understand the origin of matter, and measuring the evolution of the Universe. Researchers from all around the world are gathering in Oaxaca to discuss recent progress in, and the future of gravitational-wave science. The workshop "Detection and analysis of gravitational waves in the era of multi-messenger astronomy: From mathematical modelling to machine learning", provides a forum, unique in its genre, for discussing new mathematical methods in modelling, detecting, and analyzing gravitational waves, as well as their integration with machine learning, or artificial intelligence.
