Workshop — Next Frontiers in the Search for Dark Matter

Zusammenfassung:
The origin of dark matter (DM) is among the most urgent questions in fundamental physics, as astronomical observations do not inform us directly about its particle nature. The proposed workshop will bring together theorists and experimentalists to explore new theoretical avenues and detection strategies. During the workshop we will focus on well-motivated and long-standing theories of DM, such as WIMPs and axions, and we will assess the status of fast-moving current searches. We will identify new DM theories, with particular emphasis on those giving distinct predictions from WIMPs. There will also be extensive discussions about new ideas for discovering DM through direct detection, indirect detection, collider production, and cosmological observations. Finally, we will explore dark-sector extensions of the standard model, which can yield distinctive cosmological and astrophysical signals, as well as exotic events at colliders.

The purpose of the meeting is to bring together experts and young researchers in the areas of nuclear, particle and astro-physics as well as cosmology and the pertinent interrelations among these fields. With the recent observation of gravitational-wave signals of black-hole and neutron-star mergers - for the latter in coincidence with electromagnetic signals -, the meeting is particularly timely. Along with the direct searches of new particles at the LHC, low-energy phenomenology offers many complementary ways to search for physics beyond the Standard Model. The low-energy searches, however, are often hindered by the insufficiently precise knowledge of hadronic contributions. The last decade has witnessed tremendous progress towards ab-initio and model-independent determinations of these contributions. The purpose of this meeting is to cross-examine the empirical and theoretical progress in this field and the implications in beyond-the-SM physics.

Navigating the Swampland

The Swampland program gives general constraints on effective theories to be compatible with quantum gravity, which defines the Landscape of consistent theories, and is quickly gaining command of the fundamental understanding of open questions in particle physics and cosmology, ranging from the hierarchy of fundamental scales in nature, to the origin and final fate of the universe. Current research surfs over several powerful conjectures, whose riptide deposits valuable implications on the structure of effective theories, their spectrum of particles, their moduli spaces and potentials. Time is ripe to navigate the swampland, collecting these results and conjectures, and weaving them up to unveil fundamental structures in quantum gravitational theories. This workshop plans to gather the leading experts in the field to review our knowledge on the Swampland extension, the underlying related fundamental questions within quantum gravity and string theory as well as possible constraints for particle physics and cosmology.

The mathematical problem we plan to tackle takes its source in questions concerning graphene and the estimate of energy gaps. The model we study is a two dimensional massless Dirac operator on a regular bounded domain. We are interested in estimating the asymptotic of the gap at zero. More precisely, we want to derive the asymptotics for large magnetic field of the first negative eigenvalue and the first positive eigenvalue.

Ever since the Standard Model was established, there have been speculations about physics “beyond the Standard Model” (BSM), giving rise to a steady flow of models of “new physics” and letting the borders between high energy physics, astrophysics, and cosmology become increasingly permeable. So far, though, experiments failed to provide evidence for new physics, generating increasing talk of a “crisis” of these research programs, calling into question their premises, such as the principle of naturalness, or even questioning their scientific methodology. The workshop aims at approaching the present situation from a historical-critical perspective, contextualizing and questioning the developments of earlier decades, both to understand better their past and present scope, and to provide new material for reflections on contemporary physical research.

Francqui Symposium — Wavefunctions and Entanglement in Quantum Field Theory

The symposium aims at bringing together experts on the topics of variational and nonperturbative methods in quantum field theory, topological and conformal field theory, and quantum entanglement in QFT. Those topics have recently experienced a revival of interest due to advances made in the field of quantum computing and quantum entanglement theory. Area laws and entanglement Hamiltonians have opened up a new window into the structure of quantum correlations in strongly correlated systems, and led to a revisit of the variational principle for quantum field theories in the form of quantum tensor networks. Dualities, as symbolized in the picture of Magritte above, and nonlocal symmetries are proving to be manifestations of emerging order in the entanglement structure, and tensor networks provide representations for the underlying tensor fusion categories. The main purpose of this conference is to bring together the different communities that have been working on the many theoretical aspects of this program.

The Conference on Quantum gases, fundamental interactions and cosmology- Second Edition (QFC 2019) will be held in Pisa from 23 to 26 October 2019. Aim of the conference is to bring together scientists in both experimental and theoretical physics from the fields of ultracold quantum gases, fundamental interactions, and cosmology, with the aim of sharing and brainstorming on challenging open common problems, which can be zoomed in and out via a cross-disciplinary approach.

After QFC 2017, the Conference will be in its each second edition of a series of appointments to be held each second year.

The mutual frontiers among these three apparently separated disciplines have been recently blossoming with new innovative, cutting edge research. To the well-established connections between cosmology and high-energy physics, current bright examples are the research activities in analogue gravity and superfluid analogies of cosmological phenomena, and of quantum simulations of lattice gauge theories using ultracold atoms in optical lattices. We intend to use this momentum and opportunities to establish strong collaborations among participants and leading groups to open new pathways leading to breakthrough results, in this spirit, the keynote speakers of the first edition, QFC2017, have been invited and have joined the Scientific Advisory Board.

Following the last eleven successful workshops/conferences in Malaysia (2008), Singapore (2009), China (2010), Iran (2011), Thailand (2012), Singapore (2013), Nepal (2014), Iran (2015), Malaysia (2016), Thailand (2017), China (2018), University of Lucknow, India is proud to host, in collaboration with AAAPT, the 12th International Conference on Plasma Science and Applications (ICPSA 2019) from 11th to 14th November, 2019.

The conference will be held at Lucknow which is about 500 km from the national capital, New Delhi. Lucknow has always been known as a multicultural city that flourished as a North Indian cultural and artistic hub, and the seat of power of Nawabs in the 18th and 19thcenturies. It continues to be an important centre of governance, administration, education, commerce, aerospace, finance, pharmaceuticals, technology, design, culture, tourism, music and poetry.

ICPSA 2019 is a continuation of the annual meetings organized by AAAPT (Asian African Association for Plasma Training) and hosted by one of its member institutes and welcomes plasma scientists from around the globe. It is an excellent platform for early career researchers to present their work and share their ideas with world’s renowned plasma scientists.

ICPSA is broad in scope and includes topics such as: fundamentals and basic plasma physics, laser plasma, exotic plasma (including dusty plasma), quantum plasma, computer modelling of plasma, applied plasma, nuclear fusion and technology, space and astrophysical plasma, bio-plasma and cross-disciplinary studies.

Numerous Plenary and invited talks by more globally renowned Plasma scientists will be featured during the conference followed by interactive sessions to bolster the confidence of young scientists and researchers through scientific discussions and expert opinion on their research.

The scientific program includes invited papers (plenary and review) as well as oral and poster presentations of contributed papers.

REF 2019 is the 6th workshop in the series of workshops on Resummation, Evolution, Factorization. It aims to bring together experts who deal with high-energy hadronic processes where the transverse momentum of the involved partons plays a relevant role. This includes researchers of different communities specialized in, e.g., nucleon structure, transverse-momentum-dependent functions, small-x physics, jet physics, heavy-quark production, multi-parton interactions, etc. Factorization theorems and resummation of large logarithms through evolution equations are key concepts for all these communities, which address overlapping physical phenomena with however different languages, calling for mutual understanding. Indeed, the REF series of workshops aims at bridging the gap among them, to promote development and potential synergies, in view of the wealth of data taken at facilities like the LHC, RHIC or JLab, and future planned ones like the EIC.

The school offers a broad training program including: - the theoretical aspects of the acceleration and propagation of non-thermal particles, - direct and indirect measurements of cosmic rays, - the role of cosmic rays in astrophysics and its place in multi-messenger astronomy and the understanding of dark matter, - two practical sessions on propagation models and their comparison to direct measurements, and data analysis with the future Cherenkov Telescope Array.

The school is aimed primarily at students and young researchers wishing to build or perfect their knowledge of cosmic rays. Financial support is available for PhD students and CNRS staff can benefit from a support for the stay.

NDM-2020 — International Conference on Neutrinos and Dark Matter

Zusammenfassung:
Non-vanishing neutrino masses and the existence of non-baryonic Dark Matter (DM) represent the only two firm observational evidences of new physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). Proposed neutrino species can also in principle constitute the bulk of the dark matter. They may moreover leave different signatures on astrophysical scales than the hitherto standard WIMP-based cold dark matter. As the parameter space for the latter is increasingly constrained experimentally, such alternates become more relevant, along with others such as the lately topical ultra-light axions.

The NDM-2020 aims to be a forum for the discussion and exchange of ideas regarding the particle phenomenology, astrophysical signatures and experimental constraints related to those two fundamental and actively studied issues in particle and astroparticle physics, namely neutrinos and dark matter, and their possible connections.

Many remarkable properties of gauge theories rely on the topology of field configurations and/or ambient spacetime and are connected with quantum anomalies and nonperturbative excitations. These properties, often exact, have many implications in the physics of fundamental interactions, condensed matter systems and statistical mechanics models. They also account for a large part of the investigations in string theory, and combined with supersymmetry have led to exact solutions of low-energy theories and the discovery of duality relations between supersymmetric gauge theories. Meanwhile, a renewed interest in topological aspects has emerged from condensed matter physics, through the study of topological phases of quantum matter. The effective field theories for these systems are not of the usual Landau-Ginzburg-Higgs type, rather, they are described by topological gauge theories. The goal of this GGI activity is to bring together theoreticians of different backgrounds, in condensed matter, high energy and mathematical physics, with the belief that interdisciplinary approaches can lead to substantial progress in many directions.

Modularity is at the heart of many deep results in mathematics--from the proof of Fermat’s last theorem to moonshine to the Langlands correspondence. At the same time, modular group representations and automorphic forms underlie many interesting physical phenomena in quantum field theory and string theory, including understanding of dualities, boundary conditions, and supersymmetric black holes, among other things. This conference will bring together physicists and mathematicians to discuss emerging connections between a web of fundamental objects in physics and mathematics, united in the crucial role played by modularity.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world’s facility for probing fundamental physics at the electroweak scale and well beyond. As it enters a new phase of extended data accumulation, two broad challenges emerge: how to fulfill the potential for percent-level precision with the large dataset, and how to maximise the information that can be extracted from each event about the underlying scattering process, in particular with machine learning. Solving these problems will have an impact across a wide range of physics topics: establishing the properties of the newly discovered interactions of the Higgs sector and understanding electroweak symmetry breaking, enhancing the sensitivity of searches for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM), and precision measurements of a range of fundamental parameters in the Standard Model.
