REF2019 — Resummation, Factorization, Evolution

Zusammenfassung:
REF 2019 is the 6th workshop in the series of workshops on Resummation, Evolution, Factorization. It aims to bring together experts who deal with high-energy hadronic processes where the transverse momentum of the involved partons plays a relevant role. This includes researchers of different communities specialized in, e.g., nucleon structure, transverse-momentum-dependent functions, small-x physics, jet physics, heavy-quark production, multi-parton interactions, etc. Factorization theorems and resummation of large logarithms through evolution equations are key concepts for all these communities, which address overlapping physical phenomena with however different languages, calling for mutual understanding. Indeed, the REF series of workshops aims at bridging the gap among them, to promote development and potential synergies, in view of the wealth of data taken at facilities like the LHC, RHIC or JLab, and future planned ones like the EIC.

Zusammenfassung:
The school offers a broad training program including: - the theoretical aspects of the acceleration and propagation of non-thermal particles, - direct and indirect measurements of cosmic rays, - the role of cosmic rays in astrophysics and its place in multi-messenger astronomy and the understanding of dark matter, - two practical sessions on propagation models and their comparison to direct measurements, and data analysis with the future Cherenkov Telescope Array.

The school is aimed primarily at students and young researchers wishing to build or perfect their knowledge of cosmic rays. Financial support is available for PhD students and CNRS staff can benefit from a support for the stay.

NDM-2020 — International Conference on Neutrinos and Dark Matter

Zusammenfassung:
Non-vanishing neutrino masses and the existence of non-baryonic Dark Matter (DM) represent the only two firm observational evidences of new physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). Proposed neutrino species can also in principle constitute the bulk of the dark matter. They may moreover leave different signatures on astrophysical scales than the hitherto standard WIMP-based cold dark matter. As the parameter space for the latter is increasingly constrained experimentally, such alternates become more relevant, along with others such as the lately topical ultra-light axions.

The NDM-2020 aims to be a forum for the discussion and exchange of ideas regarding the particle phenomenology, astrophysical signatures and experimental constraints related to those two fundamental and actively studied issues in particle and astroparticle physics, namely neutrinos and dark matter, and their possible connections.

AstroWin'20 — International Winter School on Astronomy 2020

This is one of the largest astronomy winter schools in the region, and it seeks to promote the development of professional astronomers through this event, as well as broaden the appeal of science to local school students and the general public in the host city by organizing public lectures and discussions.

The organizers seek out up to a few select scientists to be primary lecturers at the school and also participate in content development. A series of secondary lecturers will also be invited, and the diversity of speakers are emphasized. Hands-on sessions will include theory, computation, and data analysis. Students will leave the school having replicated some of the analysis that went into recent discoveries of gravitational waves, interpreted observational data from stellar clusters, and ran a simple computer simulation of star formation. A visit and half-day mini-workshop at the TIFR National Balloon Facility, Hyderabad, where we will do some demonstration of scientific ballooning for astronomical observations along with two day exhaustive workshop on computational astrophysics and data mining.

VICQG — VI Cosmology and the Quantum Vacuum

The focus of this workshop will be on different aspects of modern theoretical cosmology, the challenges of the theory being consistent with experimental data, and the unavoidable connection of cosmological models with the quantum nature of the vacuum. A basic question in modern cosmology is: why we do not see vacuum fluctuations at cosmological scale? In addition, should the singularities of cosmological theories be treated as necessary ingredients of the classical theory or should them be considered as indicators of an underlying quantum theory, yet to be discovered? We aim to bring along to this workshop all the leading scientists working on those problems and discuss state of the art results on the above, strongly interdependent, areas of fundamental physics. The workshop will hence cover topics related to modified theories of gravity, theories of dark energy and inflation, the description of the universe’s evolution according to these theories and the incipient but compulsory modification of those within the theoretical frameworks of quantum gravity, including loop quantum cosmology, an elegant theory providing up to date a singularity free cosmological evolution. Describing and understanding the quantum vacuum is always a challenge to all these theories, as is also the comprehension of the main manifestation available of the quantum vacuum at nanometric scales, namely the Casimir effect (e.g., when confronted with van der Waals forces).

In the Standard Model, the mass of the Higgs boson is greatly destabilised by quantum corrections, and free parameters of the model need to be extremely fine-tuned in order to arrive at the measured Higgs mass. A fundamental aim of this program is to quantify the extent to which current measurements and searches can constrain models which attempt to restore naturalness by extending the SM. The expected sensitivity from future high precision running at the LHC and of planned non-collider experiments will also be studied. This program deviates from related work in this field by maintaining a sharp focus on the naturalness question and how well a top quark partner can resolve it in different theoretical scenarios using a range of measured observables.

Taking the Temperature: Statistical Nuclear Physics for Astrophysics and Applications

Statistical estimates of nuclear reaction rates are essential ingredients for astrophysical model calculations, e.g. r-process nucleosynthesis in neutron star mergers, and nuclear applications, e.g. next generation nuclear reactor performance. Rate calculations require experimental or theoretical constraints for nuclear properties such as level densities (temperature), gamma-strength functions, particle optical potentials, and level spin distributions. Recently major advances have been made experimentally constraining the statistical properties of nuclei, particularly off the valley of beta-stability, while systematic studies have identified critical data needs for astrophysics and applications. As such, the time is ripe to “take the temperature” of the field of statistical nuclear physics to share recent advances and promising opportunities.

Many remarkable properties of gauge theories rely on the topology of field configurations and/or ambient spacetime and are connected with quantum anomalies and nonperturbative excitations. These properties, often exact, have many implications in the physics of fundamental interactions, condensed matter systems and statistical mechanics models. They also account for a large part of the investigations in string theory, and combined with supersymmetry have led to exact solutions of low-energy theories and the discovery of duality relations between supersymmetric gauge theories. Meanwhile, a renewed interest in topological aspects has emerged from condensed matter physics, through the study of topological phases of quantum matter. The effective field theories for these systems are not of the usual Landau-Ginzburg-Higgs type, rather, they are described by topological gauge theories. The goal of this GGI activity is to bring together theoreticians of different backgrounds, in condensed matter, high energy and mathematical physics, with the belief that interdisciplinary approaches can lead to substantial progress in many directions.

IPA 2020 — Interplay between Particle and Astroparticle physics 2020

There are several open questions in Physics today each of which touches the fields of both Particle Physics and Astroparticle/Cosmology. For example, only 5% of the Universe is described by the Standard Model of particle physics. A far larger contribution comes from the elusive Dark Matter whose existence has been inferred from Astroparticle measurements, and for which a large variety of models have been built by the theory community. Dark Matter is searched for in dedicated direct and indirect detection experiments but also in high-energy collisions at the LHC. Other subjects, such as the baryogenesis is still an open question related both to leptogenesis and CP violation and the matter content of today’s Universe. The knowledge of the neutrino sector has greatly increased over the past decades, but the question of the hierarchy is not yet solved and would need both accelerator/astroparticle and cosmological measurements to be fully understood. The physics of inflation which will be better constrained in the coming years would also need skills from both fields to be fully explored. Is a simple extension of the Standard Model sufficient or do we need more? In many fields the “single experiment” measurements have given way to more global views of our models: electroweak fits, exploring the parameter space of models beyond the Standard Model taking into account measurements and limits on new signatures.

The IPA2020 conference will bring together experimentalists and theorists to discuss the topics mentioned above with an emphasis on exchange between the different but correlated fields.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world’s facility for probing fundamental physics at the electroweak scale and well beyond. As it enters a new phase of extended data accumulation, two broad challenges emerge: how to fulfill the potential for percent-level precision with the large dataset, and how to maximise the information that can be extracted from each event about the underlying scattering process, in particular with machine learning. Solving these problems will have an impact across a wide range of physics topics: establishing the properties of the newly discovered interactions of the Higgs sector and understanding electroweak symmetry breaking, enhancing the sensitivity of searches for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM), and precision measurements of a range of fundamental parameters in the Standard Model.
