AHRC-funded Aural Diversity Network Workshop — Workshop 5: Music and Performance
05 jan 2023 • University of Leicester/Attenborough Arts Centre, Royaume-Uni
AHRC (Arts & Humanities Research Council)
It is clear that listening encompasses a far greater range of hearing types than has heretofore been generally acknowledged. How may music and performance best address this wide range of aural diversities? What are the technical, aesthetic and sociocultural consequences of aural diversity for musical practice and theory? What are the aural skills that are required? What technologies exist or may be created to support musical engagement by aurally diverse practitioners and how may aurally diverse audiences be reached? What are the historical contexts and characteristics of aural diversity that have affected music? How may we envisage a new kind of music-making that encompasses every kind of listener? How may discussions of equality, diversity and inclusion be improved by awareness and acceptance of aural diversity?

Public Lecture — Music and Noise
12 jan 2023 • University of Wolverhampton, Royaume-Uni
Institute of Physics (IOP)
What distinguishes music from noise? What is agreeable to hear and what is not? Cannot the sound of a waterfall be soothing, relaxing and inspiring? On the opposite, aren't some of the most crafted musical compositions among the most difficult ordeals to go through for many? Is the choice of what constitutes art and what constitutes chaos an artistic, cultural, subjective one or, is there a scientific fingerprint that can, breaking down what we hear into frequencies and power spectra, identify what makes a sound one worthy of an orchestra? In this musical talk, Dr del Valle will discuss the Physics of music and explore unsuspected corners of this intemporal humane practice, showing us a way to their possibly happy encounter with the modern concept of noise music.
