Modeling, observing, and understanding flows and magnetic fields in the Earth's core and in the Sun
30. Nov 2020 - 04. Dez 2020 • Isaac Newton Institute, Cambridge, Großbritannien
INI – Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences
Like many other stars and planets, the Earth and the Sun possess magnetic fields built by dynamo action. Unlike the magnetism of most other astrophysical objects, though, the Solar and terrestrial fields have been closely studied for generations, yielding a wide variety of observational constraints that continue to challenge theory and defy prediction. Both analytical theory and numerical simulations have cumulatively yielded significant insight into how both objects build their magnetism, but a comprehensive understanding of this process has remained elusive. This meeting will aim to scrutinise and assess the results of such modelling efforts by comparison to the vast and ongoing array of observations of both the Earth and the Sun.
Is There a Common Thread to Layering in Atmospheres, Oceans and Plasmas?
05. Jan 2021 - 08. Jan 2021 • UC Santa Barbara, Vereinigte Staaten
Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP)
A fascinating and surprising phenomenon that can occur in fluid and plasma turbulence is the spontaneous formation of arrays of layers in which material properties such as density adopt a so-called “staircase” structure. The most striking examples are potential vorticity staircases in planetary atmospheres, and thermohaline staircases in the oceans. Theoretical considerations suggest that layering also plays an important role in stellar interiors (particularly through various double-diffusive processes) and in fusion confinement devices (the so-called E x B staircase). Understanding the phenomenon of layering is, therefore, not only of intrinsic scientific interest (e.g., is there a common thread to layering in these very different contexts?), but is also crucial for an accurate description of turbulent transport in, for example, models of large-scale ocean flow, the evolution of stellar interiors and confinement in tokamaks.
2021 European Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry
31. Jan 2021 - 05. Feb 2021 • Ljubljana, Slowenien
National Institute of Chemistry, Slovenia
The EWCPS2021 will be the 19th time this event is organized and is a continuation of the well-established and successful conference series that started in 1985. These biennial conferences, organized by European research groups in uneven years, have become recognized and valuable platforms to exchange experience and share progress in the development and use of analytical plasma spectrochemical techniques.

SPPT 2020 — 29. Symposium on Plasma Physics and Technology (original dates 15.-18.6.2020) POSTPONED DUE TO THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC
14. Jun 2021 - 17. Jun 2021 • Prag, Tschechische Republik
Czech Technical University in Prague & Institute of Plasma Physics CAS, Prague , Czech Republic
The Symposium on Plasma Physics and Technology has a long tradition and is usually held biennially. This will be the 29th Symposium. It was originally founded for the presentation of results of the Institute of Plasma Physics of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (IPP CAS) in 1967. Since 1969 it has gradually become a Czechoslovak forum in this branch and many famous foreign scientists have made presentations. Since 1993 it has been held in co-operation with the Department of Physics, Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University (FEE CTU) in Prague.
