Veranstalter:
Springer Nature
Zusammenfassung:
Plasmas represent the so-called 4th state of matter in which atoms break down into a gas of charged particles. In spite of tremendous progress over the past decades in understanding plasmas, there are many challenges that still confront plasma physicists, especially when it comes to the design and development of potential applications. This SPbPU-Nature Conference aims to provide a platform for the exchange of recent results between plasma scientists working on different plasma-related research topics, to stimulate further breakthroughs in fundamental understanding and advances towards new applications in this fascinating field of research.

The 25th ICSLS conference is organized by the Department of Mathematics and Physics, University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli. It will be held inside the wonderful Monumental Complex of Belvedere di San Leucio, in Caserta (Italy). Also known as Ferdinandopoli, its construction is due to king Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, who wished to create a small village around the silk factory, in the eighteenth century. The ICSLS 2020 conference covers a broad range of topics related to spectral line shape studies, including: line shapes of atomic and molecular transitions in neutral gaseous mixtures, fundamental metrology, single and multi-photoionisation processes, high and low temperature plasmas, clusters and helium droplets, nanophotonic processes, spectroscopy of stellar atmospheres and interstellar media, spectroscopy of planetary atmospheres and exoplanets, cold atoms and molecules, collision-induced spectra, processes in laser fields, innovative techniques of line shape applications for diagnostic purposes and fundamental studies with narrow optical resonances, along with applications in e.g., industrial, environmental, medical and all other potential domains of interest. Is There a Common Thread to Layering in Atmospheres, Oceans and Plasmas?
05. Jan 2021 - 08. Jan 2021 • UC Santa Barbara, Vereinigte Staaten
Veranstalter:
Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP)
Zusammenfassung:
A fascinating and surprising phenomenon that can occur in fluid and plasma turbulence is the spontaneous formation of arrays of layers in which material properties such as density adopt a so-called “staircase” structure. The most striking examples are potential vorticity staircases in planetary atmospheres, and thermohaline staircases in the oceans. Theoretical considerations suggest that layering also plays an important role in stellar interiors (particularly through various double-diffusive processes) and in fusion confinement devices (the so-called E x B staircase). Understanding the phenomenon of layering is, therefore, not only of intrinsic scientific interest (e.g., is there a common thread to layering in these very different contexts?), but is also crucial for an accurate description of turbulent transport in, for example, models of large-scale ocean flow, the evolution of stellar interiors and confinement in tokamaks.
