Organizer:
DAKAM (Eastern Mediterranean Academic Research Center)
Abstract:
The first of the theory of architecture conference series ARCHTHEO has been held since 2011 at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University focusing on the possibility of the theory without the backing of the practice or built environment. The title was, therefore, "Theory for the Sake of the Theory" in an emphatic fashion. In 2012, the discussion centered on the Living and space, the main has been chosen as "House&Home' in particular. ARCHTHEO '13 focused on the two leading roles in architecture, the architect and the so-called 'user' and 'Creativity, Autonomy and Function' has proved to be fruitful discussion theme. In 2014, 'Architecture and Text' has been discussed. Last year, 'Architecture and Criticism' was the main theme. The conferences, which has the focus on history rather than theory has started even earlier, in 2010. Architecture and Media, Architecture and Art, Interactions in the History, Architecture and Politics have the main themes of the events.

CUI '22 — X. International Contemporary Urban Issues Conference
18 Nov 2022 • Online, Turkey
Organizer:
DAKAM (Eastern Mediterranean Academic Research Center)
Abstract:
The conference aims at fostering discussions of theory and research on urban issues. Focusing on a multidimensional urban phenomenon, this international conference aims to deepen the understanding of informality by opening it to discussion with contributions from various disciplines like architecture, urban planning, sociology, history, economy and anthropology.

The emergence of informality as a concept in scholarly discussions can be traced back to the 1970s when “the informal sector” was first used by ILO reports on employment and poverty. The results of the global economic restructuring -such as the flexibilization of production and employment relations, deterioration of collective responsibility and welfare functions of the state- damage the security of the urban poor in terms of housing and working. Meanwhile, recent socio-economic public policies seem to intensify the condition of informality. Now, it is widely accepted that an informal way of living is a necessity for the urban poor as a survival strategy. Hence, informal work and housing constitute a significant proportion of urban economies and policies.

What is new in the neo-liberal age is the extending scope of informality. Today, the boundary between the formal and informal is blurred more than before since most urbanites, including the middle classes, experience both formal and informal encounters in their everyday life. Besides, even the urban rich contribute to informality by the development projects on the invaded peripheral land. Consequently, contemporary informality affects not just a marginal segment of the society but a majority of people living in urban space.

8th International Symposium on Deformation Characteristics of Geomaterials
03 Sep 2023 - 06 Sep 2023 • Porto, Portugal
Organizer:
TC101-ISSMGE, endorsed by SPG and FEUP
Abstract:
The Technical Committee on Laboratory Stress-Strain-Strength Testing of Geomaterials (TC101) of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE), endorsed by the Portuguese Geotechnical Society (SPG) and the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), invite you to participate in IS-PORTO 2023: 8th International Symposium on Deformation Characteristics of Geomaterials to be held from the 3rd to the 6th September 2023 in Porto. IS-Porto 2023 aims to continue the success of previous symposia: Hokkaido 1994, Torino 1999, Lyon 2003, Atlanta 2008, Seoul 2011, Buenos Aires 2015 and Glasgow 2019. This symposium will focus on the understanding of the deformation properties of geomaterials before failure, especially on the small-strain stiffness parameters as fundamental characteristics of geomaterials, and their implications in geotechnical design.
Topics:
Experimental investigations from very small strains to beyond failure - Advances in laboratory testing techniques (equipment and procedures). - Advances in field testing and monitoring techniques. - Advanced sampling. - Data interpretation and geotechnical imaging. - Multiscale problems in geomechanics (micro‐to‐macro strains). II. Behaviour, characterization and modelling of various geomaterials and interfaces - Constitutive modelling of geomaterials. - Physical and numerical modelling. - Anisotropy and localisation. - Time-dependent response. - Cyclic and dynamic behaviour. - Soil stabilisation and improvement. - Thermal behaviour. - Non-textbook soils: intermediate soils (partially drained, etc). - Sensitive and liquefiable soils: tailings and other highly brittle strain-softening soils. - Frozen soils. - Soil-plant interaction. III. Practical prediction and interpretation of ground response: field observation and case histories - Integrated site characterization: derived values to be actually used in the design. - Performance evaluation of geotechnical structures: how to improve our understanding of our “affordable” test methods that typically measure something else (hopefully reasonably related). - Field monitoring and observational method: new systems for measuring deformations in support of alert-to-alarm criteria.
