Charles-Augustin Coulomb : A geotechnical tribute
25 Sep 2023 - 26 Sep 2023 • France, France
Organizer:
CFMS ( French Committee for Sols Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering
Abstract:
In 1773, Charles Augustin COULOMB submitted to the Academy of Sciences his memoir entitled "Essay on an application of the rules of maximis and minimis to some problems of Statics relating to Architecture". This text is considered to be the foundation in geotechnics of subsequent work on the stability of slopes, pressures on retaining walls, bearing capacity of foundations, etc. In order to pay tribute to the contributions of Coulomb in geotechnics and to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the publication of his memoir, the French Committee for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (CFMS) is organizing an international symposium intended to highlight the various contributions of Coulomb's theory to geotechnics. It will give the opportunity to French and European experts to testify to the importance of the legacy of Coulomb's work in today's geotechnics, including in its most recent developments. During the symposium the annual honorary lecture "Coulomb Lecture" will be presented by Professor Robertson.

TINCE’23 — Technological Innovations in Nuclear Civil Engineering
23 Oct 2023 - 25 Oct 2023 • Saclay, France
Organizer:
TINCE conference will be hosted by the prestigious Paris-Saclay University, especially with the strong support of the Laboratory of Mechanics of Paris-Saclay (LMPS, involving researchers of Ecole Normale Supérieure of Paris-Saclay and Ecole CentraleSupélec) and in partnership with EDF R&D.
Abstract:
In the current context of climate change and the global energy crisis, the place of nuclear energy and its role in the future as taken a central position that has been continuously underlined by the IEA and the IPCC and that is clearly of a highest importance nowadays. Currently there are more than 50 nuclear constructions ongoing in the world and more than 35 projects that are considered as firm. In that context, we decided to place the TINCE’23 edition under the auspices of the new build challenge that is in front of us.
