Dagstuhl-Seminar — Next Generation Protocols for Heterogeneous Systems
28 Jan 2024 - 02 Feb 2024 • Schloss Dagstuhl, Wadern, Germany
Organizer:
Schloss Dagstuhl - Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik
Abstract:
The emergence of new computing systems, like cloud computing, blockchains, and Internet of Things (IoT), replaces the traditional monolithic software hardware stack with a distributed heterogeneous model. This change poses new demands on the programming languages for developing such systems: compositionality, allowing decomposition of a system into smaller, possibly heterogeneous parts and composition of the individually verified parts into a verified whole; security, asserting end-to-end integrity and confidentiality; quantitative reasoning methods, accounting for timing and probabilistic events; and, as a cross-cutting concern, certification of asserted properties in terms of independently verifiable, machine-checked proofs.

Dagstuhl-Seminar — Methods and Tools for the Engineering and Assurance of Safe Autonomous Systems
07 Apr 2024 - 12 Apr 2024 • Schloss Dagstuhl, Wadern, Germany
Organizer:
Schloss Dagstuhl - Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik
Abstract:
Autonomous systems are intended to operate without human intervention over prolonged time periods, perceive their operating environment, and adapt to changes – while pursuing defined goals or generating new ones. The perception functions process the inputs of various sensors and generate an internal model of the operating environment. By relying on this model, the decision functions plan and execute the actions required to achieve the goals of the mission. To achieve safety for an autonomous system, the engineers should ensure that the perception functions can sufficiently accurately build the model of the environment, i.e., perception and establishing a context for prediction are reliable. They also seek to ensure that the planned actions are safe, i.e., decisions do not result in actions that endanger humans or other agents in the operating environment.

Dagstuhl-Seminar — Code Search
21 Apr 2024 - 24 Apr 2024 • Schloss Dagstuhl, Wadern, Germany
Organizer:
Schloss Dagstuhl - Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik
Abstract:
Code search describes the process of retrieving source code from a repository, where that source code matches a query. Whether a developer is looking for where an error was thrown, learning how to use a new-to-them API, learning a new programming language, or browsing their team’s directory to familiarize themselves with the codebase, search underpins all these activities. Beyond those human-driven software engineering processes, search is also a component in automated software engineering, such as automated program repair, code example recommendation, and clone detection. Furthermore, new generative AI tools have challenged traditional code search by presenting alternative approaches to finding and reusing code.

This Dagstuhl Seminar brings together experts in mining software repositories, human factors in software engineering, software documentation, code examples, program analysis, and industrial code search systems to bridge the gap between industry and academia and set the roadmap for the next decade of code search research.

Dagstuhl-Seminar — Automated Synthesis: Functional, Reactive and Beyond
21 Apr 2024 - 26 Apr 2024 • Schloss Dagstuhl, Wadern, Germany
Organizer:
Schloss Dagstuhl - Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik
Abstract:
Automated synthesis of systems from specifications has been a longstanding goal of computer science. This problem has been studied by theoreticians and practitioners over decades as witnessed by an extensive and continued stream of articles related to synthesis in top-tier conferences in the field of formal methods. Despite a lot of recent progress, scalability in practical applications is still a concern. Recent advances in SAT/SMT solvers, decision tree learners, and other computational engines present an opportunity for a breakthrough in scalability. These advances have already led to powerful tools in the subarea of functional synthesis, which focuses on the synthesis of functions from relational specifications. However, much work is left to be done in order to translate these successes into scalable algorithms for more comprehensive synthesis problems, such as reactive synthesis, which aims at the automatic construction of circuits, embedded controllers, and other reactive software with complex temporal requirements. This Dagstuhl Seminar seeks to build on the recent momentum in these communities, and aims to bring together researchers in functional synthesis, reactive synthesis, and sister communities to chart the way forward. There are three broad objectives of the seminar.

Dagstuhl Research Meeting — Demands of Programming-Language Agnostic Test Case Reduction
16 Jun 2024 - 28 Jun 2024 • Schloss Dagstuhl, Wadern, Germany
Organizer:
Schloss Dagstuhl - Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik
Abstract:
It is common practice to test compilers with fuzzers that generate test programs. There have been recent advantages in language agnostic general fuzzers that can be configured with the semantics of the programming languages for which they then generate codes. Compiler writers also face submissions of codes that causes bugs during compilation. To track down the root cause of the bug in the compiler it is crucial to reduce such programs to the small core that triggers the bug. It is common practice to use programming language specific reducers to boil down bugs to their cores. Little work has been done on the challenges of language agnostic program reduction - this is the focus of this research stay.

Dagstuhl-Seminar — Programmable Host Networking
14 Jul 2024 - 19 Jul 2024 • Schloss Dagstuhl, Wadern, Germany
Organizer:
Schloss Dagstuhl - Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik
Abstract:
Most networked applications spend a significant amount of time on communication, and the software libraries and hardware used for communication often determines their performance (both throughput and latency), and their resource requirements. In the past decade, we have seen several efforts to improve communication performance and efficiency at the end-host. These include kernel bypass libraries such as DPDK, new kernel interfaces such as io_uring, in-kernel network offloads provided by XDP and eBPF, and SmartNICs of a variety of types. Each of these approaches makes trade-offs in terms of their performance, how easily they can be deployed (in private clusters and multi-tenant environments), their resource requirement, the reliability they provide, and how easy it is for programmers to use them when building networked applications. We are organizing this Dagstuhl Seminar to bring together people who work on systems, networking, programming languages, compilers, computer architecture, and distributed systems to work together to articulate and understand these trade-offs, and collectively propose approaches to improve usability, reliability, deployability, and analysis of high-performance networking software and hardware.

CSEE&T 2024 — Conference on Software Engineering Education and Training
29 Jul 2024 - 01 Aug 2024 • Würzburg, Germany
Abstract:
In a world increasingly driven by software, the role of a software engineer has never been more paramount. From the smartphones in our hands to the most intricate space exploration missions, software systems are at the very heart. Yet, as these systems continue to evolve in size, complexity, and importance, the education and training methods to prepare the next generation of software engineers must be equally adaptive and forward-looking. Over the past three decades, Software Engineering Education and Training (SEE&T) has continually risen to these evolving challenges. Initially, the focus was on defining the role of software engineers and how SEE&T integrates into broader engineering and computer science curricula. The current landscape, however, is shifting the focus towards enhanced knowledge transfer, emphasizing experiential learning, and aligning academic teaching with real-world industrial demands. The importance of effective communication, whether with clients or peers, the rising trend of project-based and problem-driven learning methodologies, and the symbiotic relationship between academia and industry form the very essence of modern SEE&T.

Dagstuhl-Seminar — Automated Programming and Program Repair
20 Oct 2024 - 25 Oct 2024 • Schloss Dagstuhl, Wadern, Germany
Organizer:
Schloss Dagstuhl - Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik
Abstract:
Automated programming refers to techniques that suggest newly written code, e.g., in the form of code completion tools. Techniques for automated programming include large language models that predict code based on natural language specifications of the intended behavior. The recent development of technologies like Codex and ChatGPT have made us examine the possibility of automated programming in the future. Automated program repair refers to a suite of techniques for automated rectification of errors or vulnerabilities in programs. Automated program repair technologies were originally developed for reducing the debugging effort for manually written code. However, interestingly these techniques can be adapted to improve automatically generated code. This Dagstuhl Seminar will explore the intersection of these two fields.
