Dagstuhl-Seminar — Grand Challenges for Research on Privacy Documents
05 jan 2025 - 10 jan 2025 • Schloss Dagstuhl – Wadern, Allemagne
Organisateur:
Schloss Dagstuhl - Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik GmbH
Résumé:
Dagstuhl Seminar will gather an interdisciplinary group of researchers from privacy, natural language processing, human-computer interaction, public policy, and law to identify and characterize key challenges to research on privacy documents: privacy policies, terms of use, cookie policies, and other texts about data practices. In the status quo, privacy documents fail to fulfill the needs of stakeholders in our information society. Although many Internet users have concerns about their privacy, most lack the time, knowledge, and other resources to understand these documents, leaving them underinformed and compromising notice and choice. The needs of other stakeholders, including researchers, policymakers, and privacy practitioners, are similarly stymied. Although a growing body of research is devoted to analyzing, reconstituting, or otherwise using these documents to satisfy stakeholders’ needs, broader interdisciplinary efforts are needed. This seminar will identify and characterize key challenges in privacy document research and produce a roadmap of how to tackle them in order to move the field forward.

Dagstuhl-Seminar — Guardians of the Galaxy: Protecting Space Systems from Cyber Threats
02 mar 2025 - 07 mar 2025 • Schloss Dagstuhl – Wadern, Allemagne
Organisateur:
Schloss Dagstuhl - Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik GmbH
Résumé:
The aim of this Dagstuhl Seminar is to tackle the pressing issue of cybersecurity within the space sector. This event wants to bring together the experts from academia and industry to tackle the open problems in securing our space infrastructure against a growing number of cyber-attacks. The need for such a seminar has never been more critical. The expansion of commercial space operations and the increasing number of satellite networks have opened new fronts for cyber threats. These threats range from practical attacks on satellite communications, as seen with the Viasat incident during the conflict in Ukraine, to academic research on exploitation of vulnerabilities in satellite firmware or full satellite takeover.

Dagstuhl-Seminar — PETs and AI: Privacy Washing and the Need for a PETs Evaluation Framework
09 mar 2025 - 14 mar 2025 • Schloss Dagstuhl – Wadern, Allemagne
Organisateur:
Schloss Dagstuhl - Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik GmbH
Résumé:
How PETs address privacy threats needs a rethink. Protecting personal data is only a first step, and is insufficient in many cases to protect people from interference with their privacy. Furthermore, an independent evaluation framework is required to assess the level of privacy protection offered by deployed PETs solutions and to protect against privacy washing. However, most computer scientists are not well equipped to address social problems on their own. Thus, this Dagstuhl Seminar aims to bring together a group of computer science and legal scholars working on privacy and AI along with industry, policy experts, and regulators to explore the role of PETs and the challenge of private and accountable AI.

Dagstuhl-Seminar — Future of Human-Centered Privacy
22 jui 2025 - 27 jui 2025 • Schloss Dagstuhl – Wadern, Allemagne
Organisateur:
Schloss Dagstuhl - Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik GmbH
Résumé:
Human-centered privacy resides in the intersection of privacy and human-computer interaction (HCI) research. It investigates users' privacy perceptions, concerns, and awareness in various settings, and also the understanding, usefulness, and usage of various privacy-enhancing technologies. On the one hand, the advance of Internet of Things, smart spaces, and AI have raised new questions that need to be investigated, e.g., how to negotiate privacy settings in the presence of different users of the same system, or how to improve the transparency of AI systems. On the other hand, there are many questions that have been explored for decades, but need to be adapted to these new areas and domains, such as "What is a privacy decision?" and "What information do users need to make a privacy decision?". Moreover, the multitude of users also includes at-risk and vulnerable populations that interact (sometimes unwillingly or unknowingly) with digital systems, and require additional research to understand their needs.
