Shaping the Future for Pollinators — Shaping the Future for Pollinators Innovations in Farmed Landscapes
11 Nov 2020 - 13 Nov 2020 • Slough-Windsor, United Kingdom
Organizer:
The Association of Applied Biologists (AAB)
Abstract:
The Association of Applied Biologists (AAB) has teamed up with the British Ecological Society and Royal Entomological Society to deliver a 3-day conference “Shaping the Future for Pollinators: Innovations in Farmed Landscapes”. Pollinators play a vital role in maintaining both semi-natural and agricultural ecosystems and healthy populations bolster food security, livelihoods and social wellbeing. With evidence that many species of pollinators are in decline, their conservation and management is of great public, economic and political interest. As a result, the ecology and conservation of managed and wild pollinators is a rapidly growing field of research, alongside the study of their associated ecosystem services. This conference aims to determine how we can shape farmed landscapes to make them resilient to future challenges such as climate change. Delegates will explore the impact of agricultural practices at the farm and landscape scale on pollinator behaviour, ecology and the delivery of ecosystem services. Talks and discussions not only to share current best practices on the sustainable management of pollination services, but explore how novel innovations can create new opportunities and address future risks. This conference aims to bring together researchers, practitioners and policymakers to debate recent advancements in the field of pollinator research; and also to go beyond ecological research to explore emerging technologies within the field. Based just 15 minutes from both London and the historic city of Windsor, delegates will be able to deepen their understanding of the topics, expand their networks, and enjoy the nearby attractions on the approach to Christmas. A public ‘Myth Busting’ event will held locally to raise awareness and increase public understanding of pollinators and pollination services.

LuWQ2021 — 5th International Interdisciplinary Conference on LAND USE and WATER QUALITY: Agriculture and the Environment
17 May 2021 - 20 May 2021 • Maastricht, Netherlands
Organizer:
RIVM National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, the Netherlands (principle organiser); Aarhus University Denmark; Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS); and Umweltbundesamt (UBA), German Environment Agency, Germany.
Abstract:
LuWQ2021 is an interdisciplinary conference on the cutting edge of science, management and policy to minimise effects of agriculture and land use changes on the quality of groundwater and surface waters. The conference aims to discuss the entire ’policy cycle’ to enable enhancing the quality of the water environment, which includes problem recognition, formulation of technical options, policy formulation, interaction between policy makers and stakeholders (i.e. pressure groups), policy implementation, monitoring and research. The conference also aims to facilitate networking opportunities and to intensify contacts (a) between soil/water related scientists, agro-related scientists, social scientists, ecological scientists and economists, and (b) between scientists, water managers and policy makers. The key strength of the conference is twofold. On the one side, LuWQ has a well-defined narrow focus on ‘agriculture and water quality’. On the other side, the conference is broadly oriented with regard to the various professional disciplines related to the conference topics. Based on the experience from previous Land Use and Water Quality conferences, it is just the diversity in professional background of participants which results in a multi-faceted conference programme. Consequently, LUWQ offers sessions on a broad variety of topics, all of them however dedicated exclusively to agriculture and water quality. In this sense, the conference topics range – to illustrate by a few randomly chosen examples – from scientific research on denitrification and travel time, …, challenges in monitoring and modelling at different scale (parcels, field, region), …, practice-oriented and technical measures to limit leaching of nutrients and agrochemicals, …, development of management options to mitigate effects on water quality in drinking-water protection areas, including cooperation between local governments, water supply companies and farmers, …, to policy development, and lessons to be learned from policy implementation, e.g. comparison of farmers’ behaviour between top-down and bottom-up implementation of agri-environmental measures.

7th EGU Galileo Conference: Second workshop on isotope-based studies of water partitioning and plant-soil interactions
28 Jul 2021 - 30 Jul 2021 • Hanover, Germany
Organizer:
EGU, the European Geosciences Union
Abstract:
Over the last decade there have been tremendous advances in both technological development and process-based understanding of ecohydrological processes. Along with these, several long-standing assumptions have been questioned and novel, highly debated hypotheses proposed. The workshop addresses the urgent need to share experiences, discuss and advance knowledge about ecohydrological and physiological mechanisms that regulate the selection of different water sources taken up by plants. The workshop aims to gather scientists with different scientific background (hydrology, ecology, plant physiology, soil science, remote sensing, ...) but common research interests in using stable isotopes of water as tracers to study the cycling of water through the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum. We put a special focus on novel and innovative methods for the measurement and application of isotope-based methods, as well as interdisciplinary studies.
Topics:
Water partitioning at various interfaces, Determination of root water uptake depths using isotope-based methods , Partitioning of Evapotranspiration in its components , Mixing models , Methodological advances in monitoring water stable isotopes , Advances in continuous monitoring techniques of soil and plant water isotopes , Extraction methods and related issues, Plant physiological aspects and constraints related to water partitioning , Combining water stable isotopes and other tracers to improve the understanding of ecohydrological processes, Isotopic labeling and multi-tracer applications (2H, 18O, 15N, 13C) , Large-scale studies employing water stable isotopes and upscaling of field studies , Novel approaches in combining isotope-based methods with remote sensing , Development and application of isotope-enabled models

Organizer:
International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC)
Abstract:
Futuristic Approaches towards Seed to Market Strategies Since the first Congress held at Vienna in 1967, crop protection experts have been sharing their views and solutions on emerging issues in agriculture of global significance. However, the lack of understanding among various communities about crop protection chemicals still persists, with many export commodities being rejected by different countries. There is a need to tackle this issue both at a National and International level, bringing together various stakeholders on one platform.
