AVWS1 — Workshop: Individual Vehicle Autonomy: Perception and Control
05 Oct 2020 - 09 Oct 2020 • Los Angeles, California, United States
Organizer:
IPAM
Abstract:
This workshop will bring together researchers working on the theoretical sides of deep learning techniques for perception and control of automated vehicles with researchers interested in assuring these autonomous systems operate with safety guarantees. Moreover, experts in sensing and imaging technology will be brought to the table, to cover the full pipeline from the collection of the data, over the AI theory and development, all the way to the software and actuation challenges. Additional themes addressed in this workshop include interactions between vehicle sensing and the infrastructure, and cybersecurity aspects related to sensing and machine learning (how to purposefully mislead sensors and AI).

Workshop II: Safe Operation of Connected and Autonomous Vehicle Fleets
26 Oct 2020 - 30 Oct 2020 • Los Angeles, CA, United States
Organizer:
UCLA / IPAM
Abstract:
The goal of ensuring safe mobility has been at the forefront of government agencies and industry since the introduction of the mechanized transportation. Connected vehicle technologies were initially introduced to allow vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to infrastructure systems to enable the next generation of safe vehicles. Similarly, autonomous vehicles has often been looked at as a way to reduce accidents and fatalities, often associated with human error. However, fulfilling the promise of vision zero (zero deaths, accidents, etc.) is still a long way off (or maybe not possible at all?). This workshop is aimed at understanding if it is possible to build provably safe vehicles that operate in the presence of humans, both as passengers of the AVs and as pedestrians, bicyclists, etc.

AVWS3 — Workshop III: Large Scale Autonomy: Connectivity and Mobility Networks
16 Nov 2020 - 20 Nov 2020 • Los Angeles, CA, United States
Abstract:
This workshop aims to bring together the essential communities from mathematics and engineering to address forthcoming issues central to our future transportation systems. It will bring together the operations research experts developing the next generation of fleet dispatching algorithms vital to mobility on demand services, the transportation engineers responsible for planning the future of our public and private transportation systems, and the modelers responsible for predicting new congestion dynamics at local and city scales. The workshop will also explore how these systems will operate in city, suburb, and rural contexts to support mobility needs for all.

Workshop IV: Social Dynamics beyond Vehicle Autonomy
30 Nov 2020 - 04 Dec 2020 • Los Angeles, CA, United States
Abstract:
In some application fields, automation will eventually remove humans from the loop, and autonomous systems will operate far away from any human agents. Not so with autonomous vehicles. Recent trends in urbanization are showing that future cities will flourish with human activity and autonomous vehicles will need to actively work with and around the humans. The development of autonomous vehicles can therefore not be undertaken without a better understanding of human nature. At the same time, with full autonomy, a fundamental paradigm shift will occur in how we, as humans and as a society, will see, perceive, and interpret the process of driving. This workshop brings together researchers from a variety of disciplines, including experts on social/behavioral, ethics, legal, and policy aspects, as well as researchers working on other heterogeneous systems that can serve as inspirations.
