Introduction to Image Analysis 2025
08 Apr 2025 - 09 Apr 2025 • University of Galway, Galway, Ireland
Organizer:
Royal Microscopical Society (RMS)
Abstract:
Recent advancements in microscopy technology have revolutionized our ability to routinely acquire large, multi-dimensional image datasets. However, gaps remain in the effective analysis of this data, primarily due to a lack of computational skills among researchers. This often results in a reliance on qualitative, manual image assessments, which lack the precision, reproducibility, and scalability that automated, quantitative analysis can provide. To bridge this gap, this two-day workshop is designed to empower microscopists and researchers with the necessary skills and tools to confidently analyse their data. Under the instruction of experienced core facility staff from the Francis Crick Institute and King’s College London, participants will be introduced to open-source tools such as FIJI and napari, and will be introduced to methodologies for automating their image analyses, thus enhancing research precision, efficiency, and reproducibility.

Light Microscopy Summer School 2025
09 Jun 2025 - 10 Jun 2025 • Biology Department, University of York ,York, United Kingdom
Organizer:
Royal Microscopical Society (RMS)
Abstract:
The Light Microscopy Summer School is a two day course held at the University of York covering the principles of light microscopy. Participants are also trained in practical issues surrounding light microscopy. After introductory presentations, the course is taught predominantly through hands-on practical sessions. The course is suitable for both novices and more experienced users wanting to gain a greater understanding of the microscope and feedback every year is always fantastic. Students usually come from a range of backgrounds, within both research and commercial organisations. All benefited greatly from the course and left with increased understanding and skills. The course is immediately followed by a two-day hands-on Confocal Course - Getting the most from your Confocal Course

Course — Getting the most from your Confocal Course 2025
11 Jun 2025 - 12 Jun 2025 • Biology Department, University of York ,York, United Kingdom
Organizer:
Royal Microscopical Society (RMS)
Abstract:
This two day annual confocal course utilises many different sample types and fluorescent probes (DNA stains, classic antibody labels and fluorescent proteins) which are chosen to best demonstrate particular problems and techniques. Focus is always on the techniques they enable and the problems they generate, which will be applicable to any sample types. Day 1 takes participants through the basic principles of confocal microscopy and then shows them how to configure and image multicolour, multidimensional samples using a confocal microscope. Day 2 builds on the experience of day 1 and demonstrates FRAP and spectral profiling.

BIA25-01 — EMBO Practical Course Advanced methods in bioimage analysis
14 Sep 2025 - 19 Sep 2025 • Heidelberg, Germany
Organizer:
EMBL Heidelberg
Abstract:
Microscopy is a key methodology in life science research, where the reliability of scientific findings based on data generated on microscopes rely on substantiated qualitative and quantitative image data analysis. Due to the complexity of the data, without expert guidance, it is very likely that image analysis algorithms may be applied incorrectly, possibly even producing erroneous results. Moreover, the diversity of imaging modalities, analysis algorithms and software solutions is growing so rapidly that even experts are overwhelmed. This course aims to promote excellence in bioimage analysis, targeting scientists who already work in this area or harbor ambitions to do so – and will instruct on the latest developments in the field with ample group and networking activities with leading experts in the topic.
