PNCMI 2022 — Polarized Neutron School
25. Jul 2022 - 29. Jul 2022 • Gaithersburg, Maryland, Vereinigte Staaten
Veranstalter:
NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR)
Zusammenfassung:
The Polarized Neutron School will provide a comprehensive introduction to polarized neutrons, techniques and scientific applications. Staff will give a series of lectures focused on neutron scattering techniques and applications for a variety of scientific fields. These lectures will cover small-angle scattering, reflectometry, diffraction/inelastic scattering, and instrumentation. The lectures will be followed by hands-on experiments in small groups and the relevant data reduction process. The school will be held at the NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) in Gaithersburg, Maryland. This will provide a useful background before the PNCMI conference. The school is intended for master/doctoral students and young postdoctoral scientists familiar with scattering techniques.

2022 Sagan Summer Workshop — Exoplanet Science in the Gaia Era
25. Jul 2022 - 29. Jul 2022 • California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA - hybrid, Vereinigte Staaten
Veranstalter:
Hosted by The NASA Exoplanet Science Institute, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA
Zusammenfassung:
The 2022 Sagan Summer Workshop will focus on the topic of exoplanet science in the Gaia era. The ESA Gaia mission has been mapping the Galaxy for over seven years, measuring very accurate positions and motions of over 1 billion stars. It has already greatly contributed to exoplanet science through the determination of more accurate stellar parameters, which in turn improve planet parameters, the detection of stellar companions, and the identification and characterization of young moving groups. In the near future, the unprecedented astrometric accuracy will result in the discovery of new exoplanets, as well as the characterization of known planets. The workshop will introduce the basics of astrometry, the impact of Gaia astrometry on astrophysics, and the astrometric detection and characterization of exoplanets. The synergy between the different planet detection techniques of astrometry, transits, radial velocities, and imaging will be discussed, as well as future advances in astrometry.

The Sagan Summer Workshops are aimed at advanced undergraduates, grad students, and postdocs, however all are welcome to attend. There is no registration fee for these workshops and the registration link will be available in February 2022.

IIS2022 — 11th ITER International School
25. Jul 2022 - 29. Jul 2022 • San Diego, Vereinigte Staaten
Veranstalter:
US Burning Plasma Organization, University of California at San Diego, and General Atomics
Zusammenfassung:
The School is jointly hosted and organized by the Aix-Marseille University and the ITER Organization and alternates between Aix-en-Provence, France, and sites within the ITER Members. The subject of this year's school is "ITER plasma scenarios and control" with a scientific programme coordinated by P. de Vries (ITER Organization), D. Humphreys (General Atomics) and C. Holcomb (Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory). As the start of ITER operation approaches, it is timely to address this challenging multidisciplinary topic: the development of integrated operating scenarios and required plasma control to facilitate the ITER goals, particularly for plasmas self-heated by fusion-born alpha-particles.

Workshop — New four-dimensional gauge theories
24. Okt 2022 - 29. Okt 2022 • Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, Berkeley, Vereinigte Staaten
Veranstalter:
Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MRSI)
Zusammenfassung:
This workshop will bring together researchers working on new four-dimensional gauge theories from the perspectives of differential geometry, algebraic geometry, and physics. Over the last 25 years, physicists have made tantalizing conjectures relating the Vafa–Witten equation to modular forms and the Kapustin–Witten and Haydys–Witten equations to knot theory and the geometric Langlands programme. The analytical challenges in the way of establishing these predictions are now being pursued vigorously. More recently, algebraic geometers have had enormous success in confirming and refining Vafa–Witten's predictions for projective surfaces. The workshop will serve as a platform for reporting on recent progress and exchanging ideas in all of these areas, with the aim of strengthening existing and fostering new interactions.

Bootstrapping Quantum Gravity
03. Jan 2023 - 24. Feb 2023 • Santa Barbara, Vereinigte Staaten
Veranstalter:
UC Santa Barbara, Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics
Zusammenfassung:
The AdS/CFT Correspondence, an enduring cornerstone of theoretical physics, turns 25 in November 2022. An outstanding problem in AdS/CFT is to understand the origins of the correspondence in the most fundamental terms possible. Harnessing substantial progress over the last several years in nonperturbative quantum and conformal field theory, this program will develop a constructive approach to the emergence of bulk spacetime in AdS/CFT, rooted in the rigorous modern language of conformal field theory and the conformal bootstrap. By leveraging a new generation of techniques, the program aims to constrain gravitational observables and to sharpen our understanding of the principles governing the quantum gravity landscape. The program will extend the horizons of the conformal bootstrap itself, by applying existing techniques to new holographic observables and by drawing lessons from non-bootstrap approaches.
