Wilhelm and Else Heraeus-Foundation

This seminar is dedicated to a highly important topic in current biophysical research - the development and use of fluorescent markers for advanced fluorescence methods such as high-resolution fluorescence microscopy or single-molecule studies in living cells. Indeed, more and more laboratories around the world are committed to implementing these advanced microscopy techniques, with an increasing number of dedicated platforms. However, there is a lack of overall knowledge about the selection of fluorescent markers, their photophysical properties, and the type of artifacts they can create. The seminar’s objective, through interdisciplinary discussion and courses at the interface between physics, chemistry and biology, is to overcome this gap by transferring knowledge to the participants’ laboratories. Our seminar also aims to make participants aware of new developments in the field in order to prepare them to become major players in the breakthroughs that may result from them. The seminar is aimed at PhD students and young scientists as well as research engineers and experienced researchers exploring new areas.

This IHP summer school, consisting in a series of lectures by Andrea Cianchi and Jean Dolbeault, will cover modern techniques concerning the Sobolev and other related inequalities. The first course will focus on reduction principles for Sobolev-type inequalities, based on symmetrization, isoperimetry, interpolation, and rearrangements. The second course will focus on carré du champ techniques, entropy methods and their application to extremal functions, symmetry, rigidity, and stability.

The purpose of the school is to provide the newer generation of scientists working in this field with the basic knowledge necessary to carry out research in this field. Students and early postdocs are particularly welcome to register.

The school aims to highlight recent significant progress on the mathematical analysis of complex quantum systems, and to indicate interesting open questions for the future. The lectures will emphasize interacting and correlated systems as well as random systems, with methods drawn from analysis and probability to algebra and topology.

Controlling transport of fluids and charged particles in nanoscale confinement is a key challenge in many areas of science and engineering. In extreme confinement, the conventional macroscopic description of transport breaks down and fundamentally new approaches connecting atomistic description with experimental observations are required. The proposed summer school is timely and will provide valuable training for young nano scientists.
