Advances in Quantum Transport in Low Dimensional Systems

The aim of this conference is to bring together experts from various areas of solid state quantum physics with specializations in quantum transport in low-dimensional systems (2D, 1D and 0D). This will be an opportunity for both academia and industries to seek new future possibilities in the emerging solid state quantum technologies and nano devices with special interest in the spin physics of low-dimensional systems. The conference will also provide a great opportunity for enriching the knowledge of young researchers and students through interaction with the experts in concerned areas.

Autumn School on Correlated Electrons: Dynamical Mean-Field Theory of Correlated Electrons

Correlated systems are characterized by strong electron-electron interactions, resulting in many-body effects eluding a static mean-field description. They thus proved largely intractable until the development of dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). In this approach, mapping the lattice onto an auxiliary impurity problem gives a local dynamical self-energy, which captures the essence of electronic correlations. DMFT is exact in the limit of infinite dimensions, and often provides an excellent approximation for real crystal structures. This crucial insight represented a paradigm shift in the study of correlations. Solving ever more complex impurity problems nowadays allows the simulation of real materials, making contact with experiment via the calculation of spectra, dynamical response functions, and non-equilibrium properties. Even subtle non-local effects can be captured using various approaches, including clusters of impurities or diagrammatic expansions. Thus DMFT finds application not only in correlated bulk systems but also in heterostructures, and can even be employed to understand the properties of topological phases of strongly correlated electron systems.

This year's school will introduce the concept of dynamical mean fields and explore how it can be used to understand the physics of real materials. Lectures will range from Fermi liquids and the limit of infinite dimensions to the physics of quantum impurities and their relation to the properties of correlated lattice systems.

The goal of the school is to introduce advanced graduate students and up to this modern method for the realistic modeling of strongly correlated matter.

Electrons may be like people. By collaborating, they can bring life to extraordinary emergent phenomena. For example, when electrons pair up, this gives rise to superconductivity, a quantum property whose technological impacts could radiate into such pressing areas as energy storage or transportation. However, superconductivity has not yet revealed the secret of its origins. Nevertheless, we live in a time of excitement in this field thanks to the numerous new superconductors discovered and synthesized in recent years, whose diversity enriches our approaches to the phenomenon. To study these materials, experimenters and theorists have developed many tools to face the challenge, pushing the technological limits of our experiments and going beyond the models that have structured the theoretical successes of the past century. We live in an inspiring time for superconductivity, the jewel of emergent phases. This Gordon Research Seminar will bring together graduate students, post-docs, and early-career scientists to discuss the recent advances in our understanding of superconductivity and frame it within the broader picture of quantum materials.

INMS Workshop — Topological Quantum Computation

Topology is likely to be featured prominently in any truly useful quantum computation scheme. The hurdle of scalable fault-tolerance is insurmountable with the current incremental progress -- while it is possible to engineer systems supporting hundreds of physical qubits, applications beyond academic interest require millions of qubits to implement robust error correction. Topological quantum computation (TQC) relies upon the preparation of topological phases of matter supporting non-abelian anyons to perform inherently fault-tolerant operations. As errors are corrected at the hardware level through the topological nature of anyons, the problem of scalability is simultaneously overcome. On the other hand, despite years of effort we still don't have unassailable confirmation that non-abelian anyons exist. This workshop will bring together researchers in a diversity of fields in and around TQC for the purpose of broadening and deepening the subject, with an eye towards accelerating the realization of scalable technology.

Motivated by theoretical work that pointed to new opportunities, tremendous progress has been made over the past several years in using moiré superlattices formed from two-dimensional materials as a laboratory for the study of quantum materials. This development has opened up an exciting new scientific opening, one in which mathematics and theoretical physics have a very large role to play by identifying moiré systems that are likely to exhibit new or poorly understood electronic phenomena, by inventing mathematical methods that enable testable predictions of physical properties, and by unravelling the meaning of experimental observations.
