Résumé:
Quantum technologies exploit the ability to prepare, manipulate and detect single quantum objects such as atoms, photons and electrons to enhance the performance of applications in quantum communications, quantum computing and simulation, and quantum sensing/metrology. In the last decades impressive progress has been made in a large variety of physical systems providing an excellent experimental test bench for novel concepts introduced within the framework of quantum information science theory, and opening the path to new devices for advanced quantum technologies. The aim of this conference on quantum technologies is to bring together people from academia and industry who are active in this field or have an interest in new emerging areas. We appreciate contributions ranging from basic research on quantum components and systems to industrial development of quantum-based products, prototypes and instruments.

810. WE-Heraeus-Seminar — Condensates of Light

Bose-Einstein condensation has in the last thirty years been observed in several physical systems, including cold atomic gases and exciton-polaritons, which are mixed states of matter and light in solid state systems. Other than massive particles photons usually do not exhibit Bose-Einstein condensation despite having bosonic nature, the background being that in blackbody radiation, as the textbook example for a photonic gas, the chemical potential vanishes, and at low temperature photons vanish instead of exhibiting condensation. More recently, Bose-Einstein condensations of photons has been observed in low-dimensional systems, e.g. by confining light in dye-solution filled optical microresonators, the use of plasmonic nanoparticle arrays or erbium-doped fiber cavities. Quantum fluids of light have allowed for the observation of novel quantum liquid effects, both in the regimes of near and partial thermal equilibrium. The seminar will illuminate the different platforms and the effects observed in this rapidly evolving field.

Résumé:
Correlated states of electrons give rise to quantum matter, such as ordered magnets, spin liquids, superconductors, and topological materials. In lower dimensions, correlations assume a still pronounced importance. The exciting phenomena hosted and technological applications promised by these states of matter have further inspired the scientific community to engineer hybrids where different ingredients for correlations are provided by separate materials coupled together. Thus, such low-dimensional hybrid nanostructures have enabled engineering novel states of matter with intriguing physics, often not admitted by any single platform.

Cavity control of quantum materials

Résumé:
Cavities have emerged as a powerful tool for material control, enabling new phases of matter, engineering dynamical processes in cold atoms and altering chemical reaction rates. At the heart of this potentially revolutionary technology lies the fundamental question: to what extent can quantum fluctuations of light be leveraged to control static and dynamical properties of many-body systems through cavities. To tackle this question, we seek to convene experts across diverse research domains focused on cavity-based material control. This interdisciplinary gathering aims to cross fertilize different disciplines with new methods and approaches. In particular topics of interest include: Identifying new avenues of material control using quantum light and addressing the potential and limitations of these physical processes. Exploring new “cavity” platforms such as surface plasmons, photonic crystals or other photonic structures capable of confining light and amplifying quantum fluctuations. Reaching new regimes of light matter coupling and entanglement. Elucidating novel physical phenomena unlocked in light-matter hybrid experiments and unveiling applications of cavities for quantum technologies.

Following the editions in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2022, the goal of the workshop is to follow up visions and opportunities in Atomtronics: Atomic quantum matter, like Bose-Einstein condensates, manipulated in electric, magnetic, or optical circuits of very different spatial shapes and intensity. The typically low decoherence/dissipation rates of cold atoms systems and the high controllability and enhanced flexibility of potentials for ultracold matter make Atomtronics very attractive for enlarging the scope of existing cold-atom quantum technology. With the current know-how in the field, circuits with micrometer scale precision can be realized. Important aspects of mesoscopic physics and devices can also be explored.

Résumé:
Since the first experimental realization of Bose-Einstein condensation in ultracold atomic gases in 1995, there have been several substantial breakthroughs. Today, systems of bosonic or fermionic quantum gases allow for an unprecedented high level of experimental control concerning all ingredients of the underlying many-body Hamiltonian. Therefore, ultracold gases are considered to be ideal quantum simulators, that is, they are best capable to simulate difficult problems in quantum many-body physics as they occur in condensed matter and other fields of physics. In response to the occurrence of many new research directions in recent years, it is highly desirable to give a coherent overview over the diverse facets which are now appearing, and to reflect upon the future perspectives of the field.

Moiré materials offer an unprecedented level of tunability for band structure, symmetry, and topology, creating a rich platform to investigate various phenomena within a unified approach. The conference will focus on pressing theoretical questions in moiré materials, such as the origin of superconductivity, the nature of correlated states, and the role of topology, as well as experimental challenges and novel techniques. Furthermore, the conference aims to investigate emerging tunable platforms, including twisted superconductors, topological surface states, quasi-periodic moiré systems, and twisted magnetic materials.

The control of quantum many-body states of matter in solid-state systems with short strong classical laser pulses has seen a surge in the past decade. Time-resolved experiments on solid-state systems have made rapid strides in inducing or enhancing correlated states of electrons, ranging from superconducting, magnetic, and correlated insulating phases to topological states of matter. The goal of this conference is to bring together leading researchers from different backgrounds – theory and experiment, solid state, and quantum optics – to review recent advances and to address promising new directions including the extensions of quantum optical techniques and strong cavity fields to the materials realm, providing a different route to the preparation, manipulation, and interrogation of correlated electron phases.
