Non-Equilibrium Quantum Materials Design
27 jui 2023 - 29 jui 2023 • Ingelheim, Allemagne
Organisateur:
This workshop is organized by SPICE as part of the Gutenberg International Conference Center (GICC) at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU).
Résumé:
Quantum materials driven out of equilibrium by strong electric fields exhibit phenomena that challenge our physical understanding of solids and could be implemented in future device technologies. Examples include photo- and current-induced transitions to metastable hidden phases, the ultrafast optical manipulation of ferroelectricity and magnetism, light-induced superconductivity, and the creation of photon-dressed topological states. While much progress has been made in characterizing these effects, turning them into real-world functionalities requires stabilizing them at high temperature, on long time scales, and with minimal input power. These challenges are inherently of a materials nature. The focus of this workshop is to bring together experts in quantum materials synthesis (single crystals, thin films, vdW heterostructures) with experimentalists and theorists investigating non-equilibrium phenomena to spark a new generation of non-equilibrium quantum materials design – that is, to create quantum materials that are specifically designed for their out-of-equilibrium response to optical and electrical perturbations. The long-term goal is to create a feedback loop between materials synthesis, experimental characterization and theory for non-equilibrium physics, similar to the successful strategies employed in equilibrium quantum materials design.

Dynamical Response and Transport in Quantum Magnets
28 aou 2023 - 31 aou 2023 • Santa Barbara, États-Unis
Organisateur:
UC Santa Barbara, Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP)
Résumé:
Recent progress in magnetism has been made by steadily increasing our understanding of its quantum aspects, as well as by embracing the complexity of magnetic materials with entangled spin, orbital and lattice degrees of freedom. These efforts are revealing new horizons that remained hidden behind this complexity, such as the emergence of low-energy quantum gauge theories that control the collective phenomena of different classes of quantum magnets. Harnessing substantial progress over the last several years, this conference will bring participants together to address outstanding modern challenges of quantum magnetism. These will include the search for real materials with novel topologically-ordered states of matter, the computation and measurement of dynamical and transport properties that can reveal fingerprints of fractionalization and multipolar ordering and the roles of disorder and spin-phonon interaction. We will also include the emergent-electrodynamics induced by topological spin textures, the unusual dynamics of integrable systems, and the revolutionary twist on the quantum 2D magnetism provided by experiments on Moiré systems such as twisted bilayer graphene and transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) bilayers.

Electron Correlations beyond the Quasiparticle Paradigm: Theory and Experiment
18 sep 2023 - 21 sep 2023 • Santa Barbara, États-Unis
Organisateur:
UC Santa Barbara, Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP)
Résumé:
The aim of this conference is to bring together theorists and experimentalists working on materials not conforming to the Fermi-liquid paradigm, triggering a discussion of new theoretical and experimental results that continue to change our view of quantum matter. A key goal is to exchange ideas and try to establish consensus on the most basic question: ``Which non-Fermi liquid observations can be understood by cleverly applying textbook formulae and which observations require a more radical departure from the quasiparticle framework?” We specifically plan to discuss electron transport beyond the quasiparticle paradigm, the status of a putative Planckian limit on scattering, and the nature of Cooper pairing without quasiparticles, and collective modes in systems without well-defined quasiparticles. We also plan to have talks on recent developments in quantum Monte Carlo simulations and other numerical methods, and compare the results of these studies with analytical results of effective low- energy theories.

correl23 — Autumn School on Correlated Electrons: Orbital Physics in Correlated Matter
18 sep 2023 - 22 sep 2023 • Jülich, Allemagne
Résumé:
In a classic paper 50 years ago, Kugel and Khomskii demonstrated that in strongly-correlated systems orbital ordering can arise from a purely electronic super-exchange mechanism and not just the conventional co-operative Jahn-Teller effect. This work opened the field of orbital physics — a field which, since then, is undergoing continuous growth. It was understood that, beside orbital ordering, super-exchange can give rise to the orbital analogue of spin-liquid states. It was shown that the directional character of the orbitals can introduce anisotropic super-exchange interactions, which, in a simplified setting, are described by compass models, a prototype for the Kitaev model. This opened new avenues of its own. More surprising phenomena arise from the entanglement of spin and orbital degrees of freedom. New developments aim at dynamically tuning orbital occupations by pushing the system out of equilibrium, and at orbital-controlled electronics.

The goal of this year’s school is to provide students with an overview of the state-of-the art in the field of orbital physics in strongly correlated systems and the techniques used to investigate them. After introducing fundamental models and effects, lectures will focus on these effects in real materials, with introductions to crystallography and symmetries, methods for building minimal tight-binding Hamiltonians, the Jahn-Teller effect, and Coulomb-enhancements of the Jahn-Teller effect. Advanced lectures will address orbital ordering, orbital liquids and Kitaev materials, as well as theoretical approaches, from self-interaction corrected density functionals to dynamical mean-field theory and beyond. Experimental lectures will present probes of spin, orbital, and charge degrees of freedom, techniques to image orbitals and orbital ordering, as well as orbitally-controlled transport phenomena.

INMS Workshop — Topological Quantum Computation
09 oct 2023 - 13 oct 2023 • ICMS, Edinburgh, Royaume-Uni
Organisateur:
ICMS - International Centre for Mathematical Sciences
Résumé:
Topology is likely to be featured prominently in any truly useful quantum computation scheme. The hurdle of scalable fault-tolerance is insurmountable with the current incremental progress -- while it is possible to engineer systems supporting hundreds of physical qubits, applications beyond academic interest require millions of qubits to implement robust error correction. Topological quantum computation (TQC) relies upon the preparation of topological phases of matter supporting non-abelian anyons to perform inherently fault-tolerant operations. As errors are corrected at the hardware level through the topological nature of anyons, the problem of scalability is simultaneously overcome. On the other hand, despite years of effort we still don't have unassailable confirmation that non-abelian anyons exist. This workshop will bring together researchers in a diversity of fields in and around TQC for the purpose of broadening and deepening the subject, with an eye towards accelerating the realization of scalable technology.

Exploring Non-equilibrium Long-range Quantum Matter
13 nov 2023 - 16 nov 2023 • Santa Barbara, États-Unis
Organisateur:
UC Santa Barbara, Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP)
Résumé:
Quantum simulators have opened the doors to the observation of several novel phases and out-of-equilibrium phenomena of quantum many-body systems with long-range interactions. However, differing approaches to closely related questions mean that there is an increased need to bridge growing gaps between researchers with different backgrounds. This conference intends to address this need, creating a forum to study and discuss recent results in non-equilibrium long-range quantum matter. The large list of diverse topics covered by the conference will include equilibration, thermalization and transport, entanglement and information dynamics, out-of-equilibrium scaling and dynamically stabilized phases. The goal is to bridge the various perspectives coming from a wide range of separate research communities to identify those common questions which are more likely to produce fundamental and technological advancements in quantum matter experiments.

Strange Metals in Quantum Materials and Quantum Emulators
11 dec 2023 - 15 dec 2023 • Bad Honnef, Allemagne
Organisateur:
Wilhelm-and-Else Heraeus Foundation
Résumé:
Strange metals are one of the most prominent frontiers of condensed matter physics. While conventional metals are well described by Landau’s Fermi liquid theory – i.e. a quantum liquid of long-lived, local, electron-like quasiparticles – strange metals defy this paradigm. Here, the local low-energy excitations are extremely short lived and the adiabatic connection to free electrons breaks down. As a consequence, strange metals display a multitude of unusual experimental phenomena, including anomalous charge transport (for example linear in temperature and magnetic field scaling of resistance), singular thermodynamics, and characteristic dynamical scaling. Experimentally, strange metallic behavior has been reported in a variety of experimental systems including high-temperature superconductors and heavy fermion materials. Recent progress in experimental control and device fabrication not only allowed for much more accurate studies of these classic materials, but, in the process, also revealed strikingly new properties such as the unexpectedly simple and yet puzzle scaling of the magnetoresistance. Present-day technology adds novel quantum emulators such as twisted van-der-Waals heterostructures and cold atomic gases to the list of experimental systems displaying strange metallic behavior. At the same time, most recent theories explaining strange metallic behavior resort – from a healthy variation of perspectives – to such diverse concepts as exotic (beyond-Landau) critical quantum fluctuations, effective dual gravity models, and quantum hydrodynamics. As such, this WE-Heraeus Seminar aims at bringing together key figures in the research on strange metals. A particularly important mission is the fruitful cross-talks between experimentalists working on a variety of platforms, as well as theorists with different perspectives of the problem.
