DPG-Lehrerfortbildung — Geschichte der Quantenphysik / Quantenphysik im Alltag
21 oct 2024 - 25 oct 2024 • Physikzentrum Bad Honnef, Allemagne

New Perspectives in Many-body Physics with Quantum Optical Systems
29 oct 2024 - 01 nov 2024 • Santa Barbara, États-Unis
Organisateur:
UC Santa Barbara, Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics
Résumé:
There has been an explosion of new experimental platforms to explore and control the quantum interactions between atoms and light. These include dense atomic media either in the form of ordered arrays or disordered ensembles, to nanophotonic or nanophotonics-inspired interfaces, to quantum electrodynamical circuits coupled to superconducting qubits. These new platforms exhibit an additional complexity not found in conventional atom-light interfaces, arising from factors such as the ability to engineer the dispersion relation of light, the reduced system dimensionality, and/or non-perturbative multiple light scattering. This conference will gather a diverse set of researchers together in order to exchange state-of-the art developments and to discuss, identify and pose grand challenges and opportunities for the field in the near future. Experimentalists working in these fields are encouraged to participate and share their perspectives of future experimental capabilities of many-body quantum optical systems. Researchers in related fields (such as Rydberg atom arrays, ultracold molecules, superconducting qubits for quantum computing, etc.) who see opportunities in linking with quantum optics are also welcome to attend. This broad exchange should catalyze important themes for discussion and development in the field.

822. WE-Heraeus-Seminar — Chirality and Quantum Spin – a Critical Assessment
02 dec 2024 - 05 dec 2024 • Physikzentrum Bad Honnef, Allemagne
Organisateur:
Wilhelm and Else Heraeus-Foundation
Résumé:
For electrons moving in chiral molecules, one spin projection is more likely to be transported through the structure than the other, despite that the chiral molecule is often diamagnetic. This is the chiral induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect. It is a quantum phenomenon that is based on chirality, spin-orbit coupling, particle-particle interaction, and compositeness. However, exactly how these aspects are brought together and result in the CISS effect is yet an enigma. This question, among several others, will be discussed in this seminar, with the aim to reach some clarification.

QCATZ — Schrodinger Cats: the quest to find the edge of the quantum world
09 dec 2024 - 13 dec 2024 • Onna, Okinawa, Japon
Organisateur:
Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology
Résumé:
The generation of macroscopic quantum superpositions of massive objects have fascinated scientists since Schrodinger but scientific developments now promise that such superpositions may become possible in the very near future. This meeting will focus on the science of macroscopic quantum superpositions - or more commonly known as Schrodinger Cats. In the 1930s Erwin Schrodinger made a thought experiment to test the boundaries of quantum mechanics. He asked if it could be possible, not only in principle, but also in practice, to make a quantum superposition of a large-massive object (in his case a cat), in two very different positions. As far as we know - this should be possible - but extremely challenging experimentally. If one can even achieve this for nanometer (or larger), sized particles one opens the possibility of tackling many fundamental questions e.g. how does quantum interact with gravity, is there some other addition to quantum mechanics which prevents the formation of such large-massive quantum superpositions? Can such massive superpositions be used for ultrasensitive sensors. This meeting will bring experimentalists and theorists together to discuss recent science (experiment and theory), towards generating such quantum superpositions.
