Organisateur:
Benasque Science Center
Résumé:
In 2026, it will be 10 years since the first quantum computing device was put on the cloud by IBM. This event marked the beginning of an era where researchers from all over the world could access real quantum computers, assess their strengths and limitations, and develop tailor-made algorithms. Since then, several scientific fields have come together to extract the most from current-term quantum devices while preparing new algorithmic solutions for future quantum computers. The goal of this School is to expose students and young researchers to a large collection of areas in the state of the art of quantum computing, including topics of theory, hardware, and software. The current term quantum computers are imperfect, which limits some of the original quantum computing algorithms and applications. For this reason, the new generation of quantum computing scientists must know both the experimental phenomena and limitations and the possible applications, theoretical and software tools to exploit these devices.

WE-Heraeus-Seminar — New Opportunities in Physics‐based Computing: Magnonics, Spintronics, Photonics and Beyond
26 avr 2026 - 30 avr 2026 • Bad Honnef, Allemagne
Organisateur:
Wilhelm and Else Heraeus-Foundation
Résumé:
Physics-based computing explores alternatives to traditional transistor-based electronics, leveraging nonlinear phenomena in various physical domains to solve real-world problems. This approach extends the concept of analog computing, offering potential for sustainable, energy-efficient solutions in information and communication technologies. The demand for machine learning has surged, driven by advancements like ChatGPT, but the energy cost of digital, transistor-based computing remains high, particularly in large-scale data centers. In contrast, physics-based computing, such as physical reservoir computing, harnesses nonlinear dynamics in systems like magnetic skyrmions, photons, and spin waves to enable more efficient data classification, pattern recognition, and time series predictions. By operating in the nonlinear regime, these physical systems convert input signals into measurable outputs, offering a promising route to edge computing applications in fields like medical diagnostics, autonomous mobility, and smart energy grids. The strength of physical computing lies in its ability to process complex data with minimal energy consumption, without relying on traditional deep learning algorithms. Magnonics, spintronics, and photonics are key fields in this emerging area, offering systems that can serve as powerful, interconnected computational reservoirs. Spintronics, harnessing the electrons’ spin, enables the design of energy-efficient neural networks, while magnonics and photonics provide high-frequency platforms for wave-based computing. The integration of these fields, alongside other platforms such as superconductors, presents new opportunities for developing complex, scalable computing systems that can meet the growing demands of machine learning while advancing sustainable technologies.

A Grothendieck type theorem for the quantum projective line
28 jui 2026 - 12 jul 2026 • Banff, Alberta, Canada
Organisateur:
Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS)
Résumé:
A team of three leading experts in algebraic and quantum geometry will convene at the Banff International Research Station (BIRS) to tackle a longstanding conjecture on the classification of vector bundles on the quantum projective line. Their collaboration aims to bridge the gap between classical algebraic geometry and emerging structures in quantum geometry, advancing our understanding of noncommutative spaces. The classification of vector bundles has been a cornerstone of modern algebraic geometry, with the celebrated Grothendieck’s Theorem providing a complete classification of vector bundles over the classical projective line. However, the quantum analog remains an open problem, representing a major challenge in the study of noncommutative algebraic geometry. A positive solution to the conjecture under investigation would significantly advance the field, providing new insights into the structure of quantum projective spaces and their applications in both mathematics and theoretical physics.

Résumé:
To boost our ability to simulate quantum mechanical systems, we believe that insights from theoretical computer science perfectly complement the existing knowledge in physics. In particular, our own recent research has shown that automated reasoning techniques, originally developed to analyze complex (classical) information systems, show great promise in the domain of quantum mechanics. Moreover, these new approaches have been shown to break boundaries between existing approaches, combining their strengths and overcoming individual limitations. Based on these developments, we aim to realize fundamentally novel formalisms for representing and processing quantum information.

In the past decade, it has attracted the attention of experimentalists, who to put to test the thermodynamic laws reformulated for quantum mechanical processes, measure thermodynamic quantities such as work, heat, and entropy, verify fluctuation theorems, and even showcase quantum heat engines. Today, quantum thermodynamics is a cornerstone of quantum sciences, essential to the development of disruptive quantum technologies, from sensors to quantum computers.

Israeli-German WE-Heraeus-Seminar — Unifying Aspects of Topology in Quantum and Classical Systems
26 oct 2026 - 30 oct 2026 • Physikzentrum Bad Honnef, Allemagne
Organisateur:
Wilhelm and Else Heraeus-Foundation
Résumé:
In topology, properties of a geometric object are identified which remain unchanged under continuous deformations. Those properties are then referred to as topological invariants. This mathematical concept gains ever more importance in many branches of physics, comprising general relativity, quantum field theory, quantum chromodynamics, condensed matter, strongly correlated many-body system, magnetism, soft matter physics, and symmetry classification issues. Topological phases of matter have emerged as a far-reaching scientific breakthrough in the 21st century. The topological states were initially conceived as exotic states that are labeled by topological invariants interpreted as quantum numbers. Furthermore, the exotic transport properties exhibited by topological materials have been harnessed for applications in quantum technologies, making topology a very active research topic in quantum information theory and quantum computing. More recently, topological concepts have been studied in an increasingly diverse list of disciplines, also including applications in classical physics such as mechanics of elastic and deformable bodies, nonlinear dynamics, and biophysics. There are also considerable activites in mathematical physics.
