Bootstrapping Quantum Gravity
03 jan 2023 - 24 fév 2023 • Santa Barbara, États-Unis
Organisateur:
UC Santa Barbara, Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics
Résumé:
The AdS/CFT Correspondence, an enduring cornerstone of theoretical physics, turns 25 in November 2022. An outstanding problem in AdS/CFT is to understand the origins of the correspondence in the most fundamental terms possible. Harnessing substantial progress over the last several years in nonperturbative quantum and conformal field theory, this program will develop a constructive approach to the emergence of bulk spacetime in AdS/CFT, rooted in the rigorous modern language of conformal field theory and the conformal bootstrap. By leveraging a new generation of techniques, the program aims to constrain gravitational observables and to sharpen our understanding of the principles governing the quantum gravity landscape. The program will extend the horizons of the conformal bootstrap itself, by applying existing techniques to new holographic observables and by drawing lessons from non-bootstrap approaches.

Gordon Research Conference — Micro and Nanoscale Phase Change Phenomena
08 jan 2023 - 13 jan 2023 • Lucca (Barga), LU, Italie
Résumé:
Micro- and nanoscale phase change phenomena are important for a number of applications such as thermal management of electronic devices and spacecraft, micro- and nanoscale manufacturing, water desalination, thermoelectric and nuclear power generation, and energy harvesting. Progress in such applications requires advances in experimental techniques, mathematical modeling, and large-scale numerical simulations. Significant progress has been made in each of these areas in the respective research communities and discussed at many specialized conferences. The objectives of the present meeting are to provide a forum for exchange of ideas between these different communities and to focus on interdisciplinary approaches leading to a better fundamental understanding of the underlying processes governing heat transfer, fluid flow, and mass transfer over a range of length and time scales. Of particular interest will be applying recent advances in multiscale modeling, artificial intelligence, and metrology techniques to the study of phase change phenomena at the micro- and nanoscale.

781. WE-Heraeus-Seminar — Time and Clocks
27 fév 2023 - 03 mar 2023 • Bad Honnef, Allemagne
Résumé:
“Time” and “clock” are ubiquitous notions that every physicist is working with, irrespectively of whether that work is experimental or theoretical in nature. In spite of that, the theoretical meanings as well as the operational realisations of these concepts are far from obvious and certainly not unique. A whole spectrum of shifts in, and losses of, interpretations occur in the transitions between classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, special-relativistic quantum-field theory, general relativity, and, finally, quantum gravity. As a result of this, issues arise that, up to this day, are the subject of challenging and often controversial debates. Recent developments in high-precision metrology partly help to resharpen but partly also refuel these controversies. Our seminar intends to bring together scientists from different disciplines in order to foster a productive dialogue on the problematic issues in connection with “time” and “clock”. We specifically aim to characterise, in scientific terms, a common understanding of what the “problem of time” really entails. Our seminar addresses Ph.D. students as well as researchers beyond their Ph.D. degree.

11th ITER International School — The Impact and Consequences of Energetic Particles in Fusion Plasmas
17 jul 2023 - 21 jul 2023 • Aix-en-Provence, France
Résumé:
The 12th ITER International School will be hosted by Aix-Marseille University in Marseille. The subject of this year’s school is “The Impact and Consequences of Energetic Particles on Fusion Plasmas”. As the start of ITER operations approaches, it is timely to address this multidisciplinary topic that includes plasma self-heating by fusion-born alpha-particles, the influence of energetic particles on stability, diagnosing energetic particle transport and loss, and understanding runaway electrons. The ITER International School aims to prepare young scientists and engineers for working in the field of nuclear fusion and in research applications associated with the ITER Project. The adoption of a “school format” was a consequence of the need to prepare future scientists and engineers on a range of different subjects and to provide them with a wide overview of the interdisciplinary skills required by the ITER project.
