2023 Michigan Cosmology Summer School
05 jui 2023 - 09 jui 2023 • Ann Arbor, États-Unis
Organisateur:
University of Michigan
Résumé:
We are pleased to announce the second Michigan Cosmology Summer School from June 5-9, 2023 at the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor, MI. The target participants are graduate students and junior postdocs. Additional details are in the Summer School website: https://johannesulf.github.io/cosmology-school-2023/, including a preliminary list of lecturers. While we expect the majority of participants to be in-person, we will provide a hybrid setup, opening lectures and interaction spaces to online participants. This should significantly broaden the accessibility of the School to junior scientists based in countries from which it is expensive and difficult to travel to the U.S. The school will cover topics across the field of cosmology ranging from theory to experiment, but the emphasis will be on computation and the interface between data and theory. An overarching goal of the school will be to provide participants with concrete practical skills for data modeling. The focus will be on the theoretical underpinnings of inflation, dark matter, and dark energy using modern measurements, principally those coming from the LSS and CMB. The registration opens late January. The Leinweber Center for Theoretical Physics will heavily subsidize registration costs to minimize barriers for attendees. The weather in Michigan that time of the year should be very nice, with long sunny days. We are planning to organize some outdoor activities as well.

Holography@25 — School and Workshop
05 jui 2023 - 17 jui 2023 • São Paulo, Brésil
Organisateur:
ICTP South American Institute for Fundamental Research
Résumé:
The AdS/CFT correspondence, first proposed by Juan Maldacena in 1997, relates purely field theoretic models (in the absence of gravity) with a gravitational theory (usually embedded in string theory) in a higher dimension, the correspondence being holographic in nature. Since it is a duality, such that a perturbative model on one side corresponds to a nonperturbative one on the other, it has been applied to understand a multitude of interesting nonperturbative problems, in various areas of theoretical physics.

The Holography@25 will take place at the ICTP-SAIFR in São Paulo, Brazil, and there will be a School (June 5-13, 2023) and a Workshop (June 14-17, 2023). Candidates may apply either for one or both activities.

Summer School — TQFTs and their connections to representation theory and mathematical physics
19 jui 2023 - 23 jui 2023 • Bonn, Allemagne
Organisateur:
Hausdorff Center for Mathematics – hcm (Universität Bonn)
Résumé:
TQFTs (Topological quantum field theories) are of central importance in several areas of mathematics and physics. From a mathematical point of view (going back to Atiyah), a TQFT is a symmetric monoidal functor from the cobordism category to some symmetric monoidal category. It can thus be seen as a representation of a fundamental geometric category on a target category and thereby organizes interesting algebraic structures, e.g. representations of mapping class groups, in terms of cobordism categories. In recent years, TQFTs have appeared in many more mathematical areas such as algebraic topology (the study of 4-manifolds) or algebraic geometry (the study of moduli spaces). In this Hausdorff school we would like to explore various facets of TQFTs related to representation theory and mathematical physics. The interplay of representation theory and TQFT is, at least, two-fold: on the one hand side, representation theory provides input data to construct TQFTs. The most famous example is given by the quantum groups Uq(sl(2)) from which a modular tensor category and thus a Chern-Simons type TQFT can be constructed. On the other hand, TQFTs explain and organize structures appearing in representation categories, for example character varieties and their quantizations.

RAD 2023 Conference — Eleventh International Conference on Radiation, Natural Sciences, Medicine, Engineering, Technology and Ecology
19 jui 2023 - 23 jui 2023 • Herceg Novi, Monténégro
Résumé:
Given that we have long expanded the topics of RAD conferences, after ten conferences held so far, we decided to change the name, and as you can see, the name of the RAD 2023 conference is the Eleventh International Conference on Radiation, Natural Sciences, Medicine, Engineering, Technology and Ecology. We have thus included other areas, which have been already presented at RAD conferences, but were not highlighted.

Due to the lack of young researchers and the fact that young people are less and less interested in science, we will pay special attention to young researchers (PhD holders younger than 35 years old) and students (undergraduate, master and PhD students), and there will be special sections for them. So, we take this opportunity to invite all kinds of students!

IIS2023 — 12th ITER International School: The Impact and Consequences of Energetic Particles in Fusion Plasmas
26 jui 2023 - 30 jui 2023 • Aix-en-Provence , France
Organisateur:
Aix-Marseille University
Résumé:
The ITER International School (ISS) responds to the need for training in this critical energy context, where fusion research is a cornerstone for the success of a large-scale project and international impact. The IIS has naturally become a global reference in the ITER project. The ITER International School aims to prepare young scientists and engineers for working in the field of nuclear fusion and in research applications associated with the ITER Project. The adoption of a “school format” was a consequence of the need to prepare future scientists and engineers on a range of different subjects and to provide them with a wide overview of the interdisciplinary skills required by the ITER project. The subject of this year's school is “The Impact and Consequences of Energetic Particles on Fusion Plasmas”. As the start of ITER operations approaches, it is timely to address this multidisciplinary topic that includes plasma self-heating by fusion-born alpha-particles, the influence of energetic particles on stability, diagnosing energetic particle transport and loss, and understanding runaway electrons.

School and workshop on Global Categorical Symmetries
27 aou 2023 - 08 sep 2023 • Les Diableret, Suisse
Résumé:
From a modern point of view, quantum field theory associates to every symmetry a topological defect, which acts on local and extended observables. This understanding has recently led to the discovery of new higher notions of symmetry, which in turn has shed new light on some of the most mysterious and profound phenomena described by quantum field theory, including color confinement in non-abelian gauge theories and duality. The deep link between symmetry and topology finds its natural expression in the mathematics of topological quantum field theory, such as the modular tensor categories that describe invariants of knots and the long-distance physics of anyons. Recent advances have centered on the rich categorical structure of various defects and how it encodes the fundamental idea of locality, as expressed by the cobordism hypothesis.
