NanoSpace Training School — Advanced Characterization of Carbon Materials
19 jan 2026 - 23 jan 2026 • Benasque, Espagne
Organisateur:
Benasque Science Center
Résumé:
This NanoSpace Training School on Advanced Characterization of Carbon Materials is organized by the COST Action NanoSpace (CA21126). The COST NanoSpace Advanced Characterization of Carbon Materials Training School aims to provide a broad and comprehensive overview of these (nano)materials, offering a scientific foundation to understand the behavior of the materials and the experimental and theoretical characterization techniques, as well as their potential applications in astrochemistry. The science of (nano-)carbon materials (nanotubes, graphene, nanodiamonds, fullerenes, nanoporous structures, cyclic nanotube rings (CPPs), and ribbons) has recently seen significant advances. A critical aspect is to have access to their atomic structure, and composition, as well as their physical and chemical properties. The Winter School in Benasque (Aragon, Spain) will offer specialized knowledge to COST NanoSpace participants (mainly PhD students, and young researchers), systematically addressing the description of (nano)materials and the principal and advanced methods and techniques for their characterization and study, with a special emphasis on their potential applications in astrochemistry.

Cosmic Messengers: A History of Meteoritics
24 mar 2026 • University of Surrey , Royaume-Uni
Organisateur:
Institute of Physics (IOP)
Résumé:
The study of extraterrestrial matter, from meteorites passing by cosmic dust to sample returned from asteroids, has a long and fascinating history. For centuries, humans have been intrigued by stones from the sky,” but it was only relatively recently that scientists began to understand the true nature and significance of meteorites and cosmic dust. This talk explores the development of the science of meteoritics, tracing its evolution from early observations to the modern era of sophisticated analyses. We will examine key discoveries that revolutionized our understanding of these celestial messengers, particularly focusing on the “Antarctic meteorite revolution” – a period of unparalleled discovery driven by the unique conditions of the frozen continent. During this talk, I will explore this history and explain how scientists have learned to decipher these celestial objects. This journey reveals how meteoritics has helped us unravel the mysteries of the early solar system, shedding light on the formation of planets and the building blocks of life.

Give a man a record and they dance for the day, give that man a synthesizer and they dance for a lifetime
12 mai 2026 • University of Surrey , Royaume-Uni
Organisateur:
Institute of Physics (IOP)
Résumé:
In this talk Zen will take a whimsical look at how music and music making have danced with technology throughout time, and how a digital imagination could replace the automation of today, and perhaps the humans of tomorrow. He will help navigate ways to use those wishes wisely to create the right tools and rules, so that rather than replacing humans, it empowers them with new abilities, skills, and platforms for self expression. Through co-creation we can hopefully prevent the full automation of humanity, and perhaps preserve the act of creativity and art itself!
