Harnessing Quantum-optical Techniques in Solid-state Materials
03 fév 2025 - 06 fév 2025 • Santa Barbara, États-Unis
Organisateur:
UC Santa Barbara, Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics
Résumé:
The control of quantum many-body states of matter in solid-state systems with short strong classical laser pulses has seen a surge in the past decade. Time-resolved experiments on solid-state systems have made rapid strides in inducing or enhancing correlated states of electrons, ranging from superconducting, magnetic, and correlated insulating phases to topological states of matter. The goal of this conference is to bring together leading researchers from different backgrounds – theory and experiment, solid state, and quantum optics – to review recent advances and to address promising new directions including the extensions of quantum optical techniques and strong cavity fields to the materials realm, providing a different route to the preparation, manipulation, and interrogation of correlated electron phases.

Generalized Symmetries: High-Energy, Condensed Matter and Mathematics
07 avr 2025 - 10 avr 2025 • Santa Barbara, États-Unis
Organisateur:
UC Santa Barbara, Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics
Résumé:
Over the past ten years tremendous progress has been achieved in quantum field theory thanks to the realization that symmetries can be interpreted in terms of the action of topological defects on the space of operators. This gives a generalization of the notion of symmetries, explicitly realized in many instances exploiting Lagrangian field theory techniques, uncovering a rich and unexpected landscape of physical effects in condensed matter, high energy physics, and quantum gravity. This conference will bring together the major experts in the subject, and strives to be an opportunity for participants to quickly get up to speed with the most recent advances and open problems in the field.

Résumé:
Since the inaugural meeting at Kyoto, Japan in 1993, the International Symposium on Metallic Multilayers has been held around the world; in places including Cambridge (1995), Vancouver (1998), Aachen (2001), Boulder (2004), Perth (2007), Berkeley (2010), Kyoto (2013), Uppsala (2016), Madrid (2019), and Seoul (2023). Continuing with this rich tradition of success, the 12th conference will return to the UK after 30 years and be held in Leeds. The central thrust of the MML series of symposia is to bring together scientists working on metallic multilayers and heterostructures to share their latest research results and discoveries. The main emphasis of the symposium is on new developments in metallic, magnetic, and superconducting heterostructures yielding novel physical phenomena, often emerging from interfacial properties, as well as applications arising from those new effects.

Résumé:
The International Vacuum Congress is IUVSTA’s (the International Union of Vacuum Science, Technique, and Application) main meeting that has been held every three years (more or less) since 1959! The meeting see’s around 1200-1500 participants and has a vibrant exhibition of around 80-120 vendors. It brings together the entire community of scientists, engineers, teachers, sales people, industrialists that work in areas that are connected directly with, or are heavily influenced by, the science and technology of vacuum. The meeting has become a hub and celebration of the enabling of modern technology, from medical and food technologies and science, through to quantum computing, and space flight (for example current plasma thrusters for deep space flight). The congress can be seen therefore as the thread that pulls together some of the most important scientific developments and many of the exciting technologies being worked on in Australia and abroad.
