Training — Design of Experiments for Chemists and Engineers
08 May 2023 - 11 May 2023 • Online Platform, Any Location (virtual event)
Organizer:
Scientific Update Ltd.
Abstract:
Industrial Scientists can no longer afford to experiment in a trial-and-error manner, changing one factor at a time. A far more effective method is to apply a systematic approach to experimentation that considers all factors simultaneously. This approach is called Design of Experiments (DoE) and many scientists use it as an efficient way to solve serious problems afflicting their projects. DoE provides information about the interaction of factors and the way the total system works, something not obtainable through traditional testing methods. DoE also shows how interconnected factors respond over a wide range of values, without requiring the testing of all possible values directly. DoE is a fundamental aspect of Quality by Design.

Training — Secrets of Batch Process Scale-Up
08 May 2023 - 12 May 2023 • Online Platform, Any Location (virtual event)
Organizer:
Scientific Update Ltd.
Abstract:
This course is designed for those with limited or no pilot plant or scale-up experience, provides a comprehensive overview of the most common problems experienced during the scale up of laboratory batch processes, and ways to avoid or mitigate them. The difference between laboratory scale techniques and how the major unit operations are carried out in the pilot plant is a key focus of the course. Thus, along the way attendees will examine the many issues associated with raw material handling, conducting synthetic reactions, reaction workup, product crystallization, isolation and drying at the pilot plant or commercial scale.

12 Jun 2023 - 15 Jun 2023 • Online Platform, Any Location (virtual event)
Organizer:
Scientific Update Ltd.
Abstract:
This course has been developed, and is presented, by chemical engineers and chemists who specialise in facilitating knowledge transfer and understanding between different scientific and engineering disciplines working at the R&D-manufacturing interface. As a result, it does not dwell on the derivation of mathematical formulae or equations used in chemical engineering design, but instead focuses on what other disciplines need to know about the information and data that chemical engineers require for design, scale-up and process troubleshooting.

Course — Biocatalysis – Solving Scale-Up Issues with Biocatalysed Reactions
19 Jun 2023 - 20 Jun 2023 • Online Platform, Any Location (virtual event)
Organizer:
Scientific Update Ltd.
Abstract:
Many forays by organic chemists into using biocatalysis in chemical synthesis stall at the initial scale-up stage. Screening and small scale (gram) reactions progress as planned, but when scaled -up, reactions stall, take more enzyme than expected, work-ups end up with emulsion issues etc. This course will look at some of the techniques and technologies ( tricks of the trade) that can help derisk scaling up biocatalysed reactions .A further barrier to the adoption of more biocatalytic reactions are production / EHS scientists who are unsure how to handle enzymes in the plant/pilot plant. the course will also look at good sources of information/data to facilitate the use of enzymes at scale.

Course — Applied Mixing Technology for Process Development: Scaling Down to Scale Up
03 Oct 2023 - 06 Oct 2023 • Online Platform, Any Location (virtual event)
Organizer:
Scientific Update Ltd.
Abstract:
Use of the proper mixing technology is often essential for successful process results. This online course considers how we can choose appropriate mixing conditions for laboratory, pilot, and commercial scale units to ensure technical success. The course begins by rooting us in some essential basics of mixing technology. With those fundamentals, we then progress through different mixing applications in increasing levels of complexity: single-phase (blending and heat transfer), multiple phase (solid-liquid, immiscible liquid, gas-liquid, and 3-phase), and mixing in competitive rate processes (reactions and crystallizations). Throughout, we look at scale-up and scale-down by using examples from industrial processes which have a variety of mixing requirements. We will discuss how to design and execute practical experiments at the small scale which can identify mixing sensitivities in a process that could be an issue on scale-up. Though primarily focusing on operations in stirred tanks, we will also discuss mixing applications in flow systems like static mixers.

Course — Chemical and Process Safety for Development Chemists
09 Oct 2023 - 17 Oct 2023 • Online Platform, Any Location (virtual event)
Organizer:
Scientific Update Ltd.
Abstract:
In this course, the basics of chemical process safety are explained, always starting from the underlying chemistry. A lot of emphasis will be put on heat and gas evolution, how they affect the inherent process safety and how they can be measured in the lab. Basic scale-up calculations for both gas and heat evolution will be explained using examples and exercises. Guidelines will be given to prevent possible issues with heat transfer at larger scale. The importance of stability data of chemicals, reaction mixtures and products will be explained, together with different tools to determine them experimentally. Background will be provided to understand and interpret the results of reaction calorimetry and thermal stability experiments. Safety aspects of upstream or downstream processes like storage and waste streams will be discussed. The safety benefits of flow chemistry will be explained, and the specific safety evaluation needed for such flow processes will be explored as well.
