MBB2025 — Mechanics of bond breaking: from single molecules to polymer networks
10 Mar 2025 - 12 Mar 2025 • Brussels, Belgium
Organizer:
A Symposium organised in the frame of the EOS project "TETHERED"
Abstract:
Bond breaking and reforming have a determining influence on the mechanical and rheological properties of polymer materials and are crucial features to understand and control. These molecular level processes have an impact across different length scales up to the macroscopic level, and it is therefore essential to establish links between these different length scales. However, correlating bulk mechanical performances with the nanomechanical properties of individual molecular constituents remains a major challenge. This symposium aims thus at bringing together scientists working at different length scales, from single molecules to bulk materials.

Geometry of Materials
07 Apr 2025 - 11 Apr 2025 • Providence, RI, United States
Organizer:
Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM)
Abstract:
The geometric arrangement of a material’s constituents plays an important role in governing its behavior. Concepts from discrete mathematics to describe these geometric arrangements, including notions of rigidity and flexibility, can bring fundamental insight into how a material might respond to stress, be designed, be reconfigured, etc. Beyond materials, the notions of network rigidity can be applied to more abstract networks and geometries, such as those found in data science. This workshop aims to build connections between the field of mathematical rigidity theory, other topics in applied mathematics, and related areas of science and engineering.

GFSM 2025 — Nanochemistry, Hybrid Materials & Molecular Chemistry
22 Apr 2025 - 25 Apr 2025 • Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium
Organizer:
Université catholique de Louvain, Institut de la Matière Condensée et des Nanosciences
Abstract:
This conference aims to explore recent advances in research and innovation on both fundamental and applied aspects of Functional Inorganic Materials Chemistry in the frame of sustainable materials development and green energies. From the stage of development to characterization techniques including Mössbauer spectroscopy as part of a battery of advanced physical tools, we seek to improve performances and obtain new properties for new applications of molecular materials, nanomaterials, hybrid and biomaterials. The GFSM meeting will acknowledge the participation of numerous experts working in the field of condensed matter using or willing to better know Mössbauer spectroscopy. This technique, which is recognized as a powerful tool to explore structural and magnetic properties of selected metal atom surroundings, finds various applications in materials and solid state chemistry, material science, metallurgy, biology, planetology, etc.

Faraday Discussion — Advanced imaging techniques in biomineralisation research
14 May 2025 - 16 May 2025 • Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Organizer:
Royal Society of Chemistry
Abstract:
It becomes increasingly clear that the relationship between structure and function of hierarchical biominerals can only be understood by connecting the length scales and interrogating comprehensively the impact of atomic-level organisation and the multi-level assembly of the resulting composites. This Faraday Discussion will focus on the application of advanced methods to scrutinise existing paradigms in biomineralization and improve our understanding of mineralisation across length scales by bringing together different communities including world-leading experts in relevant imaging and spectroscopy techniques with the biomineralization community where these methods are commonly used.

Faraday Discussion — High-entropy alloy nanostructures: from theory to application
24 Sep 2025 - 26 Sep 2025 • London, United Kingdom
Organizer:
Royal Society of Chemistry
Abstract:
To benefit from the predicted superior properties of high-entropy alloy (HEA) nanostructures in future energy solutions, many fundamental scientific questions and challenges still remain. These include: the development of new synthetic routes to achieve nanostructures with compositional, morphological and structural control; development of new high-throughput characterization routines to examine the structural and elemental distribution of multi-elemental nanostructured materials with high spatial resolution; the development of theoretical models to predict the catalytic properties and active sites driving the reactions on multi-elemental surfaces; the evolution of HEA nanostructured catalysts under realistic operating conditions; magnetic properties of HEAs. This Faraday Discussion aims to bring together pioneers within this area in a cross-disciplinary manner by providing a platform to explore possible solutions to these challenges, while establishing a fundamental understanding of these novel materials.
