Faraday Discussion — Iontronics: from fundamentals to ion-controlled devices
21 Jun 2023 - 23 Jun 2023 • Edinburgh – hyrid, United Kingdom
Organizer:
Royal Society of Chemistry
Abstract:
Studying interaction of solvated ions with interfaces and their transport inside ionic devices has been a recurrently hot topic for research at the interface of physics, chemistry, and processing technologies. Iontronics, in a general use of this term, concern systems in which dissolved ions such as Na+, Cl-, and Ca2+ get transported. The driving force in iontronics is not necessarily electric or diffusive, but sometimes also convective due to fluid flows. The coupling between charge and fluid transport has found a wide range of applications, from signal transduction to energy generation or storage. The breadth and diversity of iontronic concepts, however, has been studied in parallel scientific tracks. To create opportunities for cross-fertilization between these tracks, this Faraday Discussion will be an opportunity to present the most recent experimental, theoretical, and numerical methods in the field, to review some of the existing challenges, both in fundamental research (e.g. understanding nanoscale ion transport) and in industrial applications (e.g. membrane technology, energy storage, imaging at the nanoscale), and to strengthen synergetic interactions between researchers addressing the microscopic and device-level mechanisms involved in these very pressing problems.

ICOMF18 — 18. International Conference on Organized Molecular Films
21 Aug 2023 - 25 Aug 2023 • Frankfurt am Main, Germany
Organizer:
Prof. Dr. Andreas Terfort, Institut für Anorganische und Analytische Chemie, Goethe-Universität Frankfurt
Abstract:
The understanding and design of interfaces is technologically more relevant than ever. In this spirit, the International Conference on Organized Molecular Films (ICOMF) will now take place for the 18th time after it started in 1982 under the title LB Conference. This international event, which alternatingly takes place in Asia, the Americas and Europe, brings together scientists from all over the world for a week of scientific exchange and networking. Based on a common interest in interfacial science, the community is very diverse, spanning from medical science through biology, chemistry and physics into the area of engineering. Therefore, this conference will host sessions such as tissue engineering, Langmuir-Blodgett films, surface-mounted metal-organic frameworks and nanoelectronics. In a continuation of the tradition, the ICOMF 18/LB 18 meeting will in particular be a platform for young scientists, for some of which the meeting will be the first time to present their research. Flash talks will drive the audience to the poster sessions and generous poster awards will provide additional impetus for excellent presentations, with the idea that the students of today will be the science leaders of the future. In the hope to attract many young scientists, the conference fee for this group is significantly below the one of the established colleagues. The location for ICOMF 18/ LB 18, Frankfurt in Germany, has been strategically chosen for easy reachability, but also because it is within one of the most vivid science regions in Germany. In addition, the city with its unique mixture of historic sites and high rises, surrounded by a lovely countryside, invites to enjoy the stay also before and after the science sessions. We look forward to a lively exchange over a glass of our world famous apple wine! Prof. Dr. Andreas Terfort, Goethe University Frankfurt

2023 workshop on bidirectional catalysis, from molecular machines to enzymes
11 Sep 2023 - 12 Sep 2023 • Marseille, France
Abstract:
This workshop focusses on the modelling and mechanistic questions related to bidirectional catalysis. Whereas many catalysts work in the two directions of the reaction, bidirectional synthetic molecular redox catalysts are scarce. In enzymology, there has been much interest in trying to elucidate what makes a particular enzyme faster in one direction (a property sometimes called the “catalytic bias”). Related to this question is how much free energy is required to kick off catalysis and what makes the so-called “reversible catalysts” function at a fast rate even close to equilibrium, a property that is needed to design energy efficient devices. Examining experimentally the relations between catalytic rate and driving force is more difficult with a biological motor than with a molecular or a surface redox catalyst, but the same concepts apply. This workshop aims at bringing together people from different fields (surface catalysis, molecular catalysis, molecular machines) to clarify the overlaps, see how much knowledge can be transferred across disciplines, and describe recent advances in the use, design, benchmarking and kinetic modeling of bidirectional catalysts.
