General Relativity Conference: Singularities and Cosmic Censorship, from Vacuum to Matter
19 mai 2026 - 22 mai 2026 • Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Organisateur:
Fields Institute, Toronto, Canada
Résumé:
This workshop focuses on gravitational singularities and the cosmic censorship conjectures, two intimately connected open problems in modern General Relativity. The event will explore recent research on weak and strong cosmic censorship, their relations to singularities arising in cosmological models or inside black holes, and how matter models affect the dynamics of these phenomena. This event will provide a platform for mathematicians and numerical physicists to discuss new developments and unanswered questions in the field.

Large N Matrix Models and Emergent Geometry
24 mai 2026 - 29 mai 2026 • Banff, Alberta, Canada
Organisateur:
Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS)
Résumé:
The goal of this workshop is to bring together experts from mathematics, quantum field theory, string theory and cosmology to make progress on an ambitious research program to obtain emergent space-time and early universe cosmology from a well defined quantum mechanical matrix model. The aim of the research program is nothing less than to develop a unified quantum theory of space, time and matter based on a well-defined mathematical foundation.

General Relativity Conference: Black holes in General Relativity, from transient behavior to long time dynamics
25 mai 2026 - 29 mai 2026 • Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Organisateur:
Fields Institute, Toronto, Canada
Résumé:
This workshop brings together mathematicians and physicists working on the dynamics of black holes. The event will explore recent breakthroughs in the stability of black holes, as well as the many remaining open questions, particularly in the near-extremal or extremal case. Topics will include longtime dynamics of black hole perturbations, including scattering problems, nonlinear studies, quasinormal modes, and unstable behaviors in both four and higher dimensions. As this is a very interdisciplinary area of research, we plan on having speakers spanning the continuum between physics and mathematics of General Relativity.

Challenging AI for Scientific Discovery: from Neuroscience to Cosmology
11 oct 2026 - 16 oct 2026 • Banff, Alberta, Canada
Organisateur:
Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS)
Résumé:
This workshop brings together leading experts in neuroscience, cosmology, and AI to develop new methods that not only help us understand the universe but also the neurons that make such understanding possible. With a focus on AI (XAI), participants will create algorithms that provide new insights on complex data by revealing how and why they make decisions. By studying the neurons that help us think and the AI that explains how it "thinks," we are not just pushing the boundaries of science—we are unraveling the very mechanisms that allow us to comprehend our place in the cosmos.
