Workshop I: Increasing the Length, Time, and Accuracy of Materials Modeling Using Exascale Computing
27 mar 2023 - 31 mar 2023 • Los Angeles, CA, États-Unis
Organisateur:
Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM), UCLA
Résumé:
The vast majority of the computing power available to the materials science community is consumed by a relatively small number of workhorse methods, such as molecular dynamics and density functional theory. These methods have been adapted to run on parallel platforms for decades, but the focus has firmly been on weak-scaling, i.e., on scaling the problem size with the number of processors. While high-performance weak-scaling implementations of these methods are extremely valuable, the focus on increasing length-scales limits opportunities for scientific discovery. Transformative impact requires the capability to leverage computing resources to simultaneously and flexibly increase length scales, time scales, and accuracy. Increasing simulation timescales requires a deep understanding of the mathematics of rare in order to inform novel methods that are specially tailored from the start, as well as strong-scaling computational engines that can leverage large computational resources on problems of relatively small sizes. This requires a dramatic rethinking of how basic algorithms in materials science are derived and implemented. Similarly, the exponential increase in computer resources now enables very high accuracy simulations with methods such as coupled clusters or quantum Monte Carlo. These methods are extremely powerful, but they tend to scale poorly with the number of electrons. The development of new flexible methods where accuracy can be systematically adjusted in order to modify the tradeoff between size and time scales would therefore be extremely beneficial. This workshop will focus on recent development of new mathematical approaches to intensive calculations at massive scale with a focus on new ways to improve scalability (both weak and strong) and extend simulations along the size, time, and accuracy axes simultaneously.

Topology, Symmetry and Interactions in Crystals: Emerging Concepts and Unifying Themes
03 avr 2023 - 06 avr 2023 • Santa Barbara, États-Unis
Organisateur:
UC Santa Barbara, Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP)
Résumé:
Recent developments in several disparate areas make it a pressing and opportune time to confront the interplay between topology, symmetry and interactions. This conference will catalyze the discussion on this broad topic by highlighting a burst of recent advancements, both theoretical and experimental, along this direction. An important goal is to enhance cross-talk between the weakly and strongly correlated communities interested in topology that have not yet had adequate interactions with each other. The conference will bring participants up to speed in this rapidly growing field and sharpen the central questions that will be discussed in the remainder of the associated program.

Symposium “CHO3-Neutron scattering enabled energy materials design” at MRS Spring Meeting
10 avr 2023 - 14 avr 2023 • San Francisco, États-Unis
Organisateur:
Materials Research Society (MRS)
Résumé:
Neutron scattering provides insight into the structure and dynamics driving material properties through a wide range of different techniques. It is a non-destructive and highly penetrating probe, which can be combined with complex sample environment enabling in situ and in operando measurements. This symposium will explore how different neutron scattering techniques can be used to explore energy materials, with the aim of understanding the structures and processes to accelerate materials development. Neutron scattering is used to understand the structure and properties of all forms of condensed matter, and is exceptionally-well suited to studying how the transport and binding of energy and charge-carrying species relate to their dynamics and the material's crystal structure. H2, H+, and Li+ are key to a range of leading energy technologies, and are excellent neutron scatterers, making neutron-based analysis ideal for in situ and in operando studies of hydrogen storage, fuel-cell, catalytic, and battery materials. Similar research into the functionality of solar-cell, thermoelectric, caloric, nuclear, and CO2 capture/storage materials rely on other unique aspects of neutron scattering and can be used to showcase how their structure and dynamics provide an understanding of the material stability and the binding and mobility of species of interest. This symposium, focussing on advances and developments in neutron scattering for the characterization of energy materials, will be of interest to new and expert users alike. Attendees with little or no experience of neutron scattering who are working on energy materials will discover how powerful neutron scattering is as a characterization method, while those with more experience will find this an invaluable networking opportunity, fostering interactions and advancing knowledge in the field.

Workshop II: Scale-Bridging Materials Modeling at Extreme Computational Scales
17 avr 2023 - 21 avr 2023 • Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics, UCLA, États-Unis
Organisateur:
Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics, UCLA.
Résumé:
Quantitatively predicting the properties of “real” structural materials is an extremely challenging endeavor, as macroscale properties depend on characteristics of the material at every scale, from nanometers (short range order, point defects, etc.), to micrometers (grain size, extended defects, etc.), to centimeters (texture, etc.). Similarly, relevant timescales range from atomic vibrations (picoseconds) to microstructural evolution times (hours to years). This extreme breadth of size and time scales makes the accurate simulations with fully-resolved atomic-scale tools (e.g., molecular dynamics) hopeless. Practical solutions must therefore rely on scale-bridging approaches that systematically upscale the lower scale physics into computationally tractable higher-scale constructs. The premise of this workshop is that extreme-scale computing can breathe new life into the field of multiscale modeling by addressing the problems identified above with brute force computing. This workshop will focus on new mathematical approaches to multiscale/multiphysics modeling, with a particular emphasis on the many theoretical and numerical challenges faced at the exascale. The goal is to bring together specialists in a range of massively parallel algorithms and researchers interested in improving the scalability of current techniques.

Gordon Research Conference — Diversity and Synergetic in Quantum Control and Quantum Technology
06 aou 2023 - 11 aou 2023 • Newport, RI, États-Unis
Résumé:
The conference will focus on the two paradigms, quantum control and quantum technology, which are highly interconnected and merging together very rapidly. The development of the general principles of quantum control is essential for future quantum technology. Quantum control deals primarily with the interaction of laser light with matter. The objective of the control is to modify the state of matter or the course of a chemical or physical process. These control tasks require “intelligent” light fields, which have to be highly controllable in frequency, phase, and intensity.

Dynamical Response and Transport in Quantum Magnets
28 aou 2023 - 31 aou 2023 • Santa Barbara, États-Unis
Organisateur:
UC Santa Barbara, Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP)
Résumé:
Recent progress in magnetism has been made by steadily increasing our understanding of its quantum aspects, as well as by embracing the complexity of magnetic materials with entangled spin, orbital and lattice degrees of freedom. These efforts are revealing new horizons that remained hidden behind this complexity, such as the emergence of low-energy quantum gauge theories that control the collective phenomena of different classes of quantum magnets. Harnessing substantial progress over the last several years, this conference will bring participants together to address outstanding modern challenges of quantum magnetism. These will include the search for real materials with novel topologically-ordered states of matter, the computation and measurement of dynamical and transport properties that can reveal fingerprints of fractionalization and multipolar ordering and the roles of disorder and spin-phonon interaction. We will also include the emergent-electrodynamics induced by topological spin textures, the unusual dynamics of integrable systems, and the revolutionary twist on the quantum 2D magnetism provided by experiments on Moiré systems such as twisted bilayer graphene and transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) bilayers.
