From displays, to materials actuation, biosensing, and even the nucleic acid bundles inside a viral capsid, liquid crystal ordering has enabled marvels in nature as well as numerous transformations in scientific, medical, and technological domains. The 2023 Gordon Research Conference on Liquid Crystals (LCs) will gather a diverse community of scientists who are pushing the boundaries of theory, experiments, and applications of liquid crystals. This meeting will feature research at the intersection of materials science, engineering, biology, chemistry, and physics, that is redefining and reinvigorating the field of liquid crystals. Topics include, but are not limited to, computational and theoretical advances in active matter, biosensors exploiting the exquisite responsiveness of liquid crystals, liquid crystal elastomers and soft robotics, synthetic and natural structural color, pharmaceuticals, and energy materials. Conference speakers and discussion leaders sample the full spectrum of creative liquid crystal researchers, from well-established authorities to junior innovators, with contributions from engineering, the life sciences, and industry.

Résumé:
Coherent control aims to steer quantum systems towards desired final states through its interaction with light. Recent years have witnessed rapid acceleration of research activity in the field. Along with new theoretical control strategies, latest advances in nonlinear optics and ultrafast laser technology have enabled spatial and temporal coherence of light to be extended through to the UV and X-ray regions. The possibility of engineering and tailoring coherent waveforms is paving the way to novel discoveries in a number of scientific disciplines at the interface between physics, chemistry and biology. Promising applications include the development and control of quantum materials and metamaterials, control of chiral matter, and high-precision spectroscopy on ultrafast time scales.

The conference will focus on the two paradigms, quantum control and quantum technology, which are highly interconnected and merging together very rapidly. The development of the general principles of quantum control is essential for future quantum technology. Quantum control deals primarily with the interaction of laser light with matter. The objective of the control is to modify the state of matter or the course of a chemical or physical process. These control tasks require “intelligent” light fields, which have to be highly controllable in frequency, phase, and intensity.

Dynamical Response and Transport in Quantum Magnets

Recent progress in magnetism has been made by steadily increasing our understanding of its quantum aspects, as well as by embracing the complexity of magnetic materials with entangled spin, orbital and lattice degrees of freedom. These efforts are revealing new horizons that remained hidden behind this complexity, such as the emergence of low-energy quantum gauge theories that control the collective phenomena of different classes of quantum magnets. Harnessing substantial progress over the last several years, this conference will bring participants together to address outstanding modern challenges of quantum magnetism. These will include the search for real materials with novel topologically-ordered states of matter, the computation and measurement of dynamical and transport properties that can reveal fingerprints of fractionalization and multipolar ordering and the roles of disorder and spin-phonon interaction. We will also include the emergent-electrodynamics induced by topological spin textures, the unusual dynamics of integrable systems, and the revolutionary twist on the quantum 2D magnetism provided by experiments on Moiré systems such as twisted bilayer graphene and transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) bilayers.
