EMBO Practical Course — Characterization of macromolecular complexes by integrative structural biology
28 May 2022 - 04 Jun 2022 • Grenoble , France
Organizer:
European Molecular Biology Organization – EMBO
Abstract:
This EMBO Practical Course aims to teach participants how to integrate structural biology approaches to expedite characterization of large macromolecular complexes from the atomic to cellular scale. Lectures and practical sessions will explain the techniques used to produce, purify, reconstitute and characterize multi-subunit protein and protein/nucleic acid complexes for structural analysis. Specifically, this EMBO Practical Course will cover multi-subunit protein expression in bacteria, insect and mammalian cells; production, folding, and purification of non-coding RNAs; affinity, electrophoretic and centrifugation methods to isolate and purify sub-complexes and holocomplexes; biochemical and biophysical experiments that inform on the stoichiometric and conformational homogeneity of complexes; and strategies for determining the overall 3D architecture of large macromolecular assemblies and ultimately their structure at atomic or pseudo-atomic resolution.

EMBO Workshop — Molecular responses of plants facing climate change
13 Jun 2022 - 17 Jun 2022 • Montpellier, France
Organizer:
European Molecular Biology Organization – EMBO
Abstract:
Climate change profoundly alters plant growth and development, presenting a serious threat to food security in the coming decades. Fortunately, considerable research in the plant sciences community focuses on understanding the physiological processes and underlying molecular mechanisms through which plants can adapt to these changes. This recently resulted in significant progress, and even positions plants as a solution to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and associated climate change effects. This EMBO Workshop will convene scientists with a broad, integrative view of plant science in the context of climate change. It will highlight the molecular mechanisms of plant adaptation to major factors associated with climate change (elevated CO2, temperature, drought and salinity), and identify processes beyond resilience to and memory of climate fluctuations. It will also pinpoint the recent molecular approaches for harnessing plants to mitigate climate change effects, and will highlight examples of adaptation to extreme life conditions to insure food security under ever more constrained environmental conditions.

EMBO Practical Course — High throughput protein production and crystallization
03 Jul 2022 - 13 Jul 2022 • Marseille , France
Organizer:
European Molecular Biology Organization – EMBO
Abstract:
High throughput methods are powerful tools for addressing protein expression, purification and crystallization challenges, veritable bottlenecks for structural and biochemical studies. We will give an accurate view of state-of-the-art methods for HT protein production, purification and sample quality assessment. The goal is to provide the students with a broad view on the latest HT available techniques, how to implement the protocols inhouse and how to access HT equipment through available platforms in the EU for protein production and crystallization. The students will learn HT experiment design, equipment use, and data analysis for reaching their goals with their target proteins.

EMBO Workshop — Nuclear structure and dynamics
09 Oct 2022 - 13 Oct 2022 • Montpellier, France
Organizer:
European Molecular Biology Organization – EMBO
Abstract:
This EMBO Workshop series broadly addresses the molecular mechanisms linked to transactions occuring in the eukaryotic cell nucleus (gene expression, nuclear organization/compartmentalization, chromatin remodelling, RNA processing and trafficking, development, evolution, diseases linked to defective nuclear processes). The latest developments will be covered by an outstanding line-up of speakers, and a broad collection of topics are covered. An emphasis is always given to emerging topics and new technologies, which allows attendees to obtain an integrative and up-to date view of the cell's nucleus biology. The workshop usually gathers cell biologists, biochemists and a growing number of physicists/biophysicists due to the types of novel approaches developped and efforts to model and quantify nuclear transactions, which are currently revolutionizing the field and strongly influencing future research.

EMBO Workshop — Adherent microbial communities: Quantitative approaches from single cell to ecosystems
10 Oct 2022 - 14 Oct 2022 • Cargese, France
Organizer:
European Molecular Biology Organization – EMBO
Abstract:
Bacteria form complex spatially structured adherent communities which involve physical forces, chemical gradients and cooperative cell-cell interactions. An integrated view of these processes at all scales from the single cell to mesoscale patterns and ecosystems requires microbiologists and physicists to bridge large disciplinary gaps. To this purpose, the involved scientific communities must not only establish new cross-disciplinary language but also train the next generation of scientists to these emerging challenges. This EMBO workshop aims to fulfill this ambitious goal and connect senior and junior researchers through a series of lectures, seminars and workshops that will zoom in, from single cell approaches, and out, to the ecology of complex microbial consortia.
