NSS/MIC — 2019 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium and Medical Imaging Conference
26 Oct 2019 - 02 Nov 2019 • Manchester, United Kingdom
Abstract:
This conference is the annual premier meeting on the use of instrumentation in the Nuclear and Medical fields. The meeting has a very long history of providing an exciting venue for scientists to present their latest advances, exchange ideas, renew existing collaboration and form new ones. The NSS portion of the conference is an ideal forum for scientists and engineers in the field of Nuclear Science, radiation instrumentation, software engineering and data acquisition. The MIC is one of the most informative venues on the state-of-the art use of physics, engineering, and mathematics in Nuclear Medicine and related imaging modalities, such as CT and increasingly so MRI, through the development of hybrid devices

Lecture — Polonium-210 as a Poison and Carcinogen: the Litvinenko Inquiry
20 Feb 2020 • Sarum College, Salisbury, United Kingdom
Organizer:
Institute of Physics – IOP
Abstract:
20 Feb 2020 19:30 to 21:00

Alexander Litvinenko died on 23rd November 2006 in University College Hospital after having drunk tea containing polonium-210 at the Millenium Hotel on 1st November. The report of the Litvinenko Inquiry was published on 21st January 2016. This talk will outline evidence presented to the Inquiry on the physical properties and biological effects of polonium-210 in relation to what is known about other alpha-particle emitting radionuclides and external gamma rays.  It will show that death within days or weeks was the inevitable consequence of the ingestion of polonium-210 by Alexander Litvinenko. Cancer risks at lower levels of exposure will also be discussed.
