At the interface of Physics, Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence
29 May 2023 - 02 Jun 2023 • Pollica, Italy
Organizer:
Pollica Physics Center
Abstract:
Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing both the technological industries and fundamental sciences. While breakthroughs in long-standing and more applied problems such as playing Go or protein folding have been well-publicized, important progress has been achieved in theoretical physics through AI techniques. For example, it provides a new way for simulating lattice QCD with matter in four dimensions, or to address issues related to building string compactifications and string field theory, while also solving difficult mathematical questions (such as building a Calabi-Yau metric or solving the accessory parameter problem in Poincaré uniformization for Riemann surfaces). On the other hand, AI algorithms are notoriously resource-consuming and their results are difficult to interpret, which is a major hurdle for scientific discovery. Physics provides a natural framework to construct an effective theory of learning and improve our understanding of AI and its performances. The objective of this interdisciplinary workshop is to bring researchers of these different areas together to improve the transfer of knowledge, techniques and ideas in order to provide deeper insights into fundamental aspects of our Universe, the scientific discovery process, and artificial intelligence.

RAD 2023 Conference — Eleventh International Conference on Radiation, Natural Sciences, Medicine, Engineering, Technology and Ecology
19 Jun 2023 - 23 Jun 2023 • Herceg Novi, Montenegro
Abstract:
Given that we have long expanded the topics of RAD conferences, after ten conferences held so far, we decided to change the name, and as you can see, the name of the RAD 2023 conference is the Eleventh International Conference on Radiation, Natural Sciences, Medicine, Engineering, Technology and Ecology. We have thus included other areas, which have been already presented at RAD conferences, but were not highlighted.

Due to the lack of young researchers and the fact that young people are less and less interested in science, we will pay special attention to young researchers (PhD holders younger than 35 years old) and students (undergraduate, master and PhD students), and there will be special sections for them. So, we take this opportunity to invite all kinds of students!

Workshop — Non-Linear Critical Point Theory in Analysis and Geometry
06 Aug 2023 - 11 Aug 2023 • Kelowna, B.C., Canada
Organizer:
Banff International Research Station (BIRS) / UBCO
Abstract:
Minimal surfaces have inspired scientists and mathematicians for centuries and remain a central area of study with a vast number of pure and applied research outputs relating directly to their study. From art and architecture, to fluid dynamics and general relativity, they have an impressive list of applications. The main reason that they remain so popular amongst mathematicians is the fact that they are mysterious, beautiful, and lead to the resolution of challenging and abstract problems, not necessarily in obviously related fields. They can be created in the home by dunking a metal hoop into soapy water - the resulting soap film is a minimal surface (no matter how you bend the hoop). Equally they are integral to, for example, certain proofs of the positive mass theorem from general relativity. A surface is minimal if it is locally stretched tight, so that if you were to focus on a small region of the surface, any perturbation of that small region will increase surface area. In abstract terms, minimal surfaces are critical "points'' of the energy - in this case the energy of a surface is given by its area.

A large quantity of physical phenomena admit such a description - they are critical with respect to some energy, or in other words ``nature always tries to optimise energy''. For example the shape of cell membranes, event horizons of black holes and the behaviour of fundamental particles all fit within this regime. This workshop brings together young and experienced researchers in the mathematical/theoretical study of these problems. It mainly utilises the theory of differential geometry and partial differential equations, or broadly Geometric Analysis. This field has enjoyed popular notoriety in recent years with one of the modern progenitors of the subject, Karen Uhlenbeck, being awarded the Abel Prize. Similarly Perelman's proof of the Poincare conjecture, a question that took 100 years (and many contributors) to answer fully, for which Perelman famously turned down the $1,000,000 award.

V Meeting on Astrophysical Spectroscopy - A&M DATA - Astronomy & Earth Observations
12 Sep 2023 - 15 Sep 2023 • Subotica, Serbia
Organizer:
Institute of Physics Belgrade
Abstract:
Efficiency of theoretical analysis, synthesis and modeling of various environments, depends on atomic data and their sources. In particular, for the modeling of stellar atmospheres and opacity calculations a large number of atomic data is needed. The same holds for Earth observations. Consequently, the development of databases with atomic data as well as astro-geoinformatics is important. This meeting will bring together physicists, astro & geophysicists to review the present stage of research in this field. The meeting is planned as an opportunity to consider the above-mentioned aspects of spectroscopic research on plenary sessions and then to work on the special mini-projects, which will result in common papers to be published in international scientific journals

Advanced Materials Safety 2023
08 Nov 2023 - 10 Nov 2023 • Saarbrücken, Germany
Organizer:
Leibniz Research Alliance Advanced Materials Safety
Abstract:
The conference „Advanced Materials Safety 2023” focuses on the impact of advanced materials on human health and the environment and appropriate design concepts supporting their safe and sustainable application. The hierarchical structure that characterizes advanced materials consists of micro- and/or nanostructured building blocks. Together with the wide range of possible compositions, this entails a complex risk potential that must be considered over their entire life cycle. The conference is therefore directed at researchers and stakeholders working in the relevant fields. Regulatory issues, safety communication and facilitation by means of research data handling will be highlighted.
