Gordon Research Seminar — Neutron Scattering
24 Jun 2023 - 25 Jun 2023 • Ventura, CA, United States
Abstract:
The objective of the 2023 GRS on neutron scattering is to bring together early-career neutron scientists, experimentalists and theorists from different communities of soft and condensed matter, with a wide range of scientific and technical expertise. A particular focus of the seminar will be the role of the neutron, as a powerful probe of multifunctional and sustainable materials, in addressing environmental societal challenges. The seminar targets exotic materials and couplings where neutron investigations of the structure and dynamics, in the bulk and at interfaces, reveal fundamental mechanisms leading to outstanding properties foreseen for immediate or future applications.

Gordon Research Conference — Neutron Scattering
25 Jun 2023 - 30 Jun 2023 • Ventura, CA, United States
Abstract:
Neutron scattering has been used as a material’s probe since the first neutron experiments in the 1930’s. It is a versatile technique, with unique characteristics, that helps to ‘see into materials in a special way’. It is used to study materials in a wide range of areas and with a variety of applications, from biomaterials for medicine and agriculture, to energy materials for storage and tackling climate change, to structural materials under real-life conditions, to quantum materials for energy, information technology, and sensing applications. As such, neutron scattering methods are contributing to making our society more sustainable, to protecting the planet and to improving the lives of everyone everywhere, now and in the years to come. This GRC will showcase the role of neutron scattering in improving well-being and progressing society, specifically in helping tackle some of our current societal challenges.

25th National School on Neutron and X-ray Scattering
06 Aug 2023 - 18 Aug 2023 • Oak Ridge, TN, United States
Abstract:
The main purpose of NXS is to educate graduate students in the use of major neutron and x-ray facilities. Lectures, presented by researchers from academia, industry, and national laboratories, include basic tutorials on the principles of scattering theory and the characteristics of the sources, as well as seminars on the application of scattering methods to a variety of scientific subjects. Students will conduct short in-person experiments at Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Spallation Neutron Source and High Flux Isotope Reactor and virtual or hybrid experiments at Argonne’s Advanced Photon source, which provide hands-on experience for using neutron and synchrotron sources.

Organizer:
Juelich Centre for Neutron Science (JCNS)
Abstract:
Juelich Centre for Neutron Science (JCNS) is happy to announce that application is open for the 25th Laboratory Course Neutron Scattering taking place September 4 - 15, 2023 in Juelich and Garching/Munich, Germany. The course will consist of one week of lectures and exercises and one week of practical training at the neutron scattering facilities of Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum MLZ. It is the aim of the course to give a realistic insight into the experimental technique and its scientific power.

Students of physics, chemistry, materials science and biosciences are invited to apply for participation. There is no tuition fee. Accommodation and meals during the course will be provided by JCNS. Travel expenses will be reimbursed within reasonable limits.

Deadline for application is May 21, 2023.

JCNS Workshop 2023 — Trends and Perspectives in Neutron Scattering: Future Instruments at Pulsed Sources
09 Oct 2023 - 12 Oct 2023 • Tutzing, Germany
Organizer:
Jülich Centre for Neutron Science (JCNS), Forschungszentrum Jülich
Abstract:
The neutron landscape has undergone some changes in recent years after the closure of several research reactors in Europe. Therefore, making available state-of-the-art new high-performance neutron sources with an optimized range of instruments is one of the issues that is occupying the modern neutron scatterer community. For their construction there is now an increasing focus on alternative techniques to nuclear fission, such as pulsed sources and, among these, accelerator-driven, low-energy compact neutron sources are considered worldwide to be the next generation for a wide range of applications.

The JCNS Workshop 2023 will be dedicated to future instruments at pulsed sources and it will have the aim of discussing the last and new developments in instrumentation for such sources together with the new opportunities offered by complementary techniques and by industrial applications.
