ISIS Neutron Training Course
01 Feb 2022 - 10 Feb 2022 • online, Any Location (virtual event)
Organizer:
ISIS Neutron and Muon Source is based at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire
Abstract:
For 2022, in the absence of the annual ISIS Neutron Training Course, the ISIS SANS Group will be running an online training course that will introduce small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), discuss data collection and processing and provide an overview to different types of measurements and data analyses. The course will consist of mixture of webinars given by members of the SANS Group and practical demonstrations of how to best obtain, use and understand SANS data. Participants will have the opportunity to practise data reduction and data analysis themselves using the ISIS IDAaaS cloud computing environment. The course is aimed at researchers from any area of science or engineering who intend to use or already do use SANS in their research programme, whether based in academia or industry. Priority will be given to applicants from the UK and ISIS partner countries. Attendees do not need to be experts already, so those with little experience of neutron science or SANS are welcome to attend. The key criterion is that participants should expect to use the SANS instruments at ISIS in their research.

FEBS 2022 Advanced Course — Lost in Integration - Probing Biomolecules with Electrons, Photons, Neutrons and Magnetic Spins
09 May 2022 - 15 May 2022 • Spetses , Greece
Organizer:
Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS)
Abstract:
This international workshop for primarily PhD students (but also postdoc) will include lectures as well as group discussions, journal clubs, panel discussions and posters. With dramatic developments of X-ray and neutron sources, cryo-EM, super resolution microscopy, single-molecule microscopy, NMR, and computation, the possibilities for addressing advanced problems in structural biology and molecular cell biology and physiology are on a fast move. It is increasingly important to integrate many sources of data to achieve proper models of dynamic interactions between biomolecules and how they define cell function. The workshop will address these challenges and also cover the individual methods to stimulate critical discourse and forward-looking visions of integral structural biology

QENS/WINS2022 — 14th Edition of the QENS series and the 9th of the WINS workshops
23 May 2022 - 27 May 2022 • San Sebastian, Spain
Abstract:
Following the spirit of QENS Conferences since 1992, the main purpose of QENS is to cover the broad spectrum of scientific activities related with the investigation of material dynamics using quasi-elastic neutron scattering techniques (accessing both, frequency and time domains). QENS 2022 will offer a platform for discussion and exchange of scientific ideas among the experts in this field, and a general overview to newcomers about the capabilities of QENS in exploring atomic and molecular motions and relaxation processes of novel materials. As a novelty, this QENS Edition will explore and exploit the potential synergies between different methods (including experimental techniques and simulations, but always with QENS in the spotlight), in order to face diverse scientific challenges emerging in different research fields.

WINS --the 9th Workshop on Inelastic Neutron Spectrometers– will cover innovative aspects of neutron instrument design. Progresses on new spectrometer projects will be presented. As in previous editions, the theme of “New idea, New concept, New design, New instrumentation for New sciences” will be followed. New developments in the application of polarization analysis, magnetic field, pressure, or improvements in sample environments for soft matter systems will be covered. Software for data acquisition, analysis and instrument simulation will be also part of the program. In analogy with the spirit of QENS 2022, the synergy with complementary methods –in this case mainly with advanced simulations and extensive Monte Carlo simulations—will be emphasized.

MLZ Conference 2022: Neutrons for mobility
31 May 2022 - 03 Jun 2022 • Lenggries, Germany
Organizer:
Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ)
Abstract:
Mobility is a fundamental ingredient of our present society. While it shapes our lives at the global and local scales, it also is responsible for about a quarter of the overall CO2 emissions. The mobility sector is actually the fastest growing source of global emissions.Improving the efficiency of energy use in transportation is thus an essential part of the present fight against the climate crisis. Neutron scattering methods offer a unique possibility to access the structure and dynamics down to the atomic scale and investigate the processes involved in many of the fields relevant to this question. This MLZ Conference aims to bring the very heterogeneous community of researchers working in those fields in contact with experts of the scattering community and to foster cross-disciplinary discussions. The main focus of the conference is on neutron methods, but complementary techniques will be covered as well.
Topics:
batteries and fuel cells, electrodes, membranes, light structural materials, synthetic fuels, CO2/pollutant capture, chemical aspects, kinetics, phase transformations, hydrogen: production, storage, conversion into power, high-temperature materials

Organizer:
This User Meeting is co-hosted by the European Spallation Source and the Institut Laue Langevin.
Abstract:
In 2018, ILL and ESS hosted their first European Users Meeting in Grenoble. This successful meeting provided the opportunity to review the achievements of the user community, present the current status of ILL and ESS and, most importantly, to look forward to the scientific opportunities ahead for neutron science. In 2020 we met remotely and we look forward to an in person hybrid meeting in Lund in 2022. The future of neutron scattering is bright, and requires both facilities and the user community to take a proactive and strategic approach to navigating and managing the changing availability of neutron instruments in a holistic way, in order to ensure the sustainability and vitality of this important research technique. As Europe’s two multinational neutron facilities, we would therefore like to invite you to the ESS and ILL European Users Meeting.
