Optica Incubator on Programmable Photonics
06 Nov 2024 - 08 Nov 2024 • Washington, DC, United States
Organizer:
Optica
Abstract:
Photonic chip platforms are now reaching a maturity where they can be put to actual use. However, developing a new chip is still slow, costly, and error-prone. Programmable photonics can lower this threshold by providing a tool to prototype new functionality without the need to go through a costly chip design-fabrication-test cycle. This programmability combined with new architectures and algorithms opens novel application possibilities, including ones that self-configure in real time to changing inputs and requirements. This programmability can be a game changer for the adoption of photonics into new fields and for growing the user community beyond the small crowd with a PhD in photonics.

Optica Incubator on Spatiotemporal Structuring of Light
13 Nov 2024 - 15 Nov 2024 • Washington, DC, United States
Organizer:
Optica
Abstract:
Optical fields are described in terms of their spatial, temporal, and polarization degrees of freedom (DoFs), which are usually modulated independently of each other. This is the foundation of the separate fields of optical beams, ultrafast pulses, and vector fields. The past five years have witnessed a paradigm shift, whereby the insights developed in these fields are merging to lay the foundation for spatiotemporally structured light, in which the spatial, temporal, and polarization DoFs are modulated jointly. New optical field structures have rapidly emerged, unexpected propagation behaviors have been observed, and novel interactions of such optical fields with photonic devices have been investigated. A plethora of applications are anticipated as these concepts are further explored and their foundations established.

Optica Design and Fabrication Congress
15 Jun 2025 - 19 Jun 2025 • Denver, Colorado, United States
Organizer:
Optica
Abstract:
Optical design and fabrication play an ever-increasing role in our modern society as more applications for optics are developed, especially in the areas of imaging, sensing and illumination systems. Of particular interest is the ability to utilize modern design tools to reduce cost, augment manufacturability and enhance system performance. New materials and unprecedented capabilities to create and measure precise aspheric and freeform optical surfaces have created a whole new design space for imaging, while new computational tools have allowed more complex systems to be both designed and fabricated. These capabilities have extended to micro-optics, head-mounted displays and large optical systems. Hot topics for this congress include the fabrication of optics by lasers, additive manufacturing of optical components, the latest freeform design tools for illumination optics design and fabrication, micro-optics and the fabrication and use of optics from new materials, including the use of metasurfaces and other flat optical component techniques in advanced optical systems.
