Freeform Optics
27 Jun 2021 - 01 Jul 2021 • Providence, Rhode Island, United States
Organizer:
The Optical Society (OSA)
Abstract:
Freeform Optics explores the evolving impact of freeform optical surfaces on optical systems for both imaging and illumination. Freeform Optics explores the evolving impact of freeform optical surfaces on optical systems for both imaging and illumination. New fabrication techniques that create optical surfaces that are not surfaces of revolution open an expansive new space for optical systems. Particularly enabled systems include illumination systems, head-worn displays and mid- and long-wave pervasive surveillance systems. But optical testing methods for these new surfaces are lacking, and the theory and implementation of an aberration theory as a basis for optical design of these surfaces was only unraveled in 2012. The scope features work on the optical design of imaging systems with freeform surfaces, evolving methods for surface representation for illumination system optimization and a perspective on the new challenges these surface present to optical testing. With the ever expanding successes from the introduction of freeform surfaces into both imaging and nonimaging (illumination) optical systems, there is innovative work being done in both academia and industry in all areas of optical system evolution including, • Optical design • Optical system simulation • Surface representation • Fabrication • Metrology • Optical system assembly

Organizer:
The Optical Society (OSA)
Abstract:
Optical design and fabrication play an ever-increasing role in our modern society as more applications for optics are developed, especially in the areas of imaging, sensing, and illumination systems. Of particular interest is the ability to utilize modern design tools to reduce cost, augment manufacturability and enhance system performance. New materials and unprecedented capabilities to create and measure precise aspheric and freeform optical surfaces have created a whole new design space for imaging, while new computational tools have allowed more complex systems to be both designed and fabricated. These capabilities have extended to micro-optics, head-mounted displays and large optical systems. Hot topics for this Congress include the fabrication of optics by lasers, additive manufacturing of optical components, the latest freeform design tools for illumination optics design and fabrication, micro-optics and the fabrication and use of optics from new materials, including the use of metasurfaces and other flat optical component techniques in advanced optical systems.

Abstract:
The Optical Tomography and Spectroscopy (OTS) Topical Meeting builds on the strong foundations of the OSA Biomedical Optics Topical meeting where groundbreaking research on optical tomography and spectroscopy was historically discussed since mid-1990’s. Example topics central to this meeting are novel instrumentation, data analysis algorithms, pre-clinical and clinical applications highlighting the validation and applicability of novel methods and concepts. This meeting is unique in the sense that it brings together researchers working at all levels of this multi-disciplinary effort and has historically been providing the echo-system that has been feeding other more specialized areas and applications. Optical coherence tomography, photoacoustics, diffuse correlation spectroscopy have all spun out of this meeting and now stand-alone application areas such as functional near-infrared spectroscopy of the brain emerged.
